“I only bought Growing Into You a few days ago and we haven’t finished it yet, but I’m already so impressed. It’s really clear and engaging, and it explains puberty, hormones and wellbeing in a way that my son understands and has found reassuring. The workbook is packed full of different activities but also has space to make notes and record his thoughts. I’m so glad I found it and would already happily recommend it to other families.”

Really happy to receive this review this morning 😊

Healthy eating doesn’t always have to begin with cutting things out.

Focusing on everything you “shouldn’t” eat can quickly make food feel restrictive, overwhelming and difficult to sustain.

Instead, try asking yourself what could I add to make this meal more nourishing?

You might start by adding:

🥦 An extra portion of vegetables to your evening meal
🫐 A handful of berries or a piece of fruit at breakfast
🌱 Beans, lentils or chickpeas to soups, salads and pasta sauces
🥜 A small handful of nuts or seeds
🥑 Avocado, olive oil or another source of healthy fats
🐟 Fish, tofu, eggs or another protein-rich food
🌾 Wholegrains in place of, or alongside, more refined options
🌿 Herbs and spices for extra flavour and plant variety

As you gradually add more colourful, satisfying and nutrient-dense foods, something often starts to change.

Your meals become more filling, your taste buds adapt, new choices become familiar habits and some of the foods you were struggling to avoid may begin to fall away naturally without strict rules or feeling deprived.

Choose one small addition and practise it until it becomes normal.

Start with addition, not deprivation.

When your internal thermostat is more sensitive, how can you support your body so it has less to deal with?

Last night I posted about struggling with the heat especially if you're peri/menopausal. This is something I've been finding difficult in recent weeks - overheating more easily than usual especially if I'm doing something active, and then struggling to cool down. If you've ever seen me post exercise you know I get a proper tomato face but this is on a different level!

Here are 3 of my favourite heatwave-friendly hormone balancing food ideas that may help:

1. A cooling protein bowl
Try: salad leaves, cucumber, tomatoes, avocado, chickpeas, tofu, salmon, prawns or boiled eggs, with olive oil and lemon dressing.

This gives you protein, fibre, fluid-rich vegetables and healthy fats without needing a hot, heavy meal.

2. Overnight oats or chia pudding
Try: oats or chia seeds with soya milk, berries, ground flaxseed, cinnamon and a spoonful of yoghurt.

This can be helpful in the evening or for breakfast if poor sleep leaves you reaching for caffeine and sugar the next day.

3. A simple smoothie with staying power
Try: frozen berries, spinach, soya milk, Greek-style yoghurt or silken tofu, ground flaxseed and a spoonful of nut butter.

The key is not just fruit on its own. Add protein and healthy fats so it supports blood sugar rather than giving you a quick spike and crash.

And don’t forget hydration.

If you’re sweating more than usual, water matters but so do minerals. Include water-rich foods, salt your meals normally with natural salt, and consider electrolytes if you’re sweating heavily or feeling headachey, weak or washed out.

If you’re finding this heatwave extra hard, it might not just be “the weather” 🌞

During perimenopause and menopause, the body’s internal temperature control can become more sensitive. Think of it like your body’s thermostat having a much narrower comfort zone.

Before menopause, your body may have coped fairly well with a wider range of temperatures. But as hormones shift, even a small rise in body temperature can be enough for your brain to say:
“Too hot. Cool down. Now.”

And that can trigger a hot flush, sweating, a racing heart, disturbed sleep or those horrible night sweats.

So when we add a heatwave on top with warm bedrooms, sticky evenings, less sleep, dehydration, and stress - it can feel like your body has completely lost the plot.

Nutrition can help by making the body feel a little less “on edge”.

Hydration is a big one, especially in a heatwave. If you’re even slightly dehydrated, your body has to work harder to cool you down. Water, herbal teas, water-rich foods, soups, smoothies, fruit and vegetables can all help. In very hot weather, or if you’re sweating a lot, you may also need electrolytes or a pinch of natural salt with meals.

Blood sugar balance matters too. Skipping meals, living on coffee, or having lots of sugary snacks can create dips and spikes that may trigger adrenaline and make hot flushes, anxiety and poor sleep feel worse.

Eat lighter if that feels better.
Hydrate before you feel thirsty.
Keep protein steady.
Don’t rely on caffeine to push through poor sleep.

Has this heatwave made your peri/menopause symptoms worse?
