Drug and alcohol use in the UK is prevalent across all sections of society and is a growing concern

Social value is a strategy for growth - and it’s central to Generis’ work in our communities.

The Generis team recently attended an event with Keepmoat, looking at how social value and inclusive partnerships can help close the skills gap and create real opportunities for people who are often overlooked - including those leaving prison or recovering from addiction.

Keepmoat shared powerful stories of supporting individuals through jobs, mentoring and structured support. Our own Laura Jarvis spoke to local business owners and leaders about how Generis can support workplaces around drug and alcohol use, while Alana highlighted the Early Intervention Team’s work in Doncaster and the support available.

The event also focused on staff wellbeing, mental health and building strong, inclusive teams - with an inspiring keynote from Lindsy James, Founder and Director of Active Fusion.

Our team thoroughly enjoyed the last week.

Theme: Relationship Between Trauma, Abuse and Misuse.

Luke Hart is a powerful public speaker who shared his lived experience of growing up with his father’s coercive control and domestic abuse, and the devastating day in 2016 when his father murdered his mum, Claire, and sister, Charlotte, using his story to challenge victim‑blaming and raise awareness about male violence against women.

His story resonates strongly with the work of organisations like Generis, Alcohol & Drug Service and Aspire Drug and Alcohol Services, highlighting how domestic abuse - like substance misuse - can often remain hidden in so‑called “ordinary”, where everything appears ‘normal’ on the surface and warning signs are easily overlooked.

Thank you to the organising team who pulled another fantastic event together. We are already looking forward to next year!

Welcome to Generis!

Introducing our new Lead Development Trainer.

When Liz Newlove joined Generis, she wasn’t just stepping into a new role - she was stepping into an entirely new perspective.

Now ten weeks into her position as Lead Development Trainer, Liz brings with her a rich background in education. Having previously worked as an ESOL tutor and before that as a primary school teacher, her career has been rooted in helping people learn, grow, and build confidence. But this move is a clear shift - from the classroom to a much broader, learning environment.

“I wanted a change of direction,” Liz explains. “Moving into adult learning opened new doors, and this role has taken that even further. It’s not just about delivering training - it’s about shaping it.”

At Generis, Liz now oversees the development and delivery of training programmes, manages trainers, and leads on expanding online e-learning. It’s a role that blends strategy with hands-on delivery - and one that’s already proving both challenging and rewarding.

In response to a national issue, Generis has launched Understanding Ketamine training.

Ketamine use in the UK has surged into a public health crisis, particularly among young people. Nearly 300,000 aged 16-59 used it last year - a record high - with 3.8% of 16-24s affected, up 231% since 2013.

Treatment admissions hit 5,365 in 2024-25 (12x rise from 2014). "K Bladders" cause irreversible damage, often misdiagnosed as infections since GPs rarely ask youth about ketamine and users hesitate to admit it.

A&E visits and weekly deaths climb, fueled by cheap supply despite Class B status. Urgent action is needed for nightlife safety.

The e-learning programme has been designed with front-line staff, education staff, local authorities and family members in mind. The aim is to enable people to understand the effects and use, spot the signs of use, explore why people turn to ketamine and importantly, how to approach someone with curiosity and care whilst gaining pratical harm-reduction advice to share.
