Worried that long-term heartburn tablets could raise your risk of stomach cancer? Reassuring news.
A large study across five Nordic countries, published in The BMJ, found no link between long-term use of PPIs (common acid-reflux medicines) and stomach cancer. The same held for another class of acid-reducing drugs.
It's observational research with some caveats, so never change medication without speaking to your GP — but it's a reassuring result for the many people who rely on these treatments. Read more:

Wearing braces and prone to acid reflux? A new lab study looked at how reflux conditions affect the metal used in orthodontic braces.
Interestingly, pepsin — a marker of reflux in saliva — on its own seemed to protect the metal. But combined with oral thrush, that protection dropped, suggesting the two together may be harder on braces over time.
It's early research done in the lab, not in patients, but a good reminder to keep reflux in check. Read more:

A new lab study tested how pepsin and oral thrush affect the metal used in braces — pepsin alone was protective, but together they reduced protection.

Has your dentist mentioned unexplained tooth wear, or "acid wear", even though you don't drink much fizzy or citrus?
It might be acid reflux — and not the obvious kind. "Silent" reflux can send stomach acid up into the mouth with no heartburn at all, slowly wearing away enamel. Often a dentist spots the signs before anyone suspects reflux is involved.
The good news: once you know, it's treatable — and the earlier you find out, the more enamel you keep. Read more:

If your dentist has spotted tooth wear they can't quite explain — acid reflux may be part of the picture, even without heartburn.

A new study in the Journal of Dentistry found that pepsin (a stomach enzyme that travels up with reflux) makes enamel erosion worse than acid alone. For people with silent reflux, where there's no obvious burning sensation, dental damage can be one of the first visible signs.

Tooth sensitivity, worn enamel or ongoing dental erosion can sometimes have a cause beyond what we eat and drink.

Reflux may play a part, even when heartburn is not obvious. When stomach contents reach the mouth, they can affect the teeth over time.

Research suggests reflux may be influenced by more than diet alone.

In a large UK study, people exposed to higher levels of air pollution were more likely to develop GERD over time.

The findings do not prove pollution causes reflux, but they suggest air quality could be one factor linked to risk.

New analysis suggests an association between long-term exposure to air pollution and higher rates of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

As a stomach enzyme carried up with reflux, pepsin can attach to the lining of the throat, voice box and oesophagus, stay there inactive but stable, and reactivate with acid, irritating these tissues and contributing to soreness, hoarseness, chronic cough and a burning or raw sensation.

Peptest is a quick, non-invasive saliva test that detects the presence of pepsin.

Some research studies suggest following a plant-based Mediterranean diet with alkaline water is as good at treating reflux symptoms as taking proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) medication.

Has changing your diet and avoiding specific foods helped with managing your reflux symptoms?
