New findings about the Vagus nerve:
“There is no single vagus nerve anatomy shared identically by everyone. Some connections are common. Some are occasional. Some appear predominantly on one side. Some divide into multiple branches in one person but appear as a single branch - or are not observed at all …
This means the vagus is not merely carrying information between the brain and body.
It is itself a living tissue with its own cellular ecology. Its behaviour may be affected by metabolism, immune activity, previous injury, inflammation, connective tissue changes and the condition of the cells supporting its fibres. That brings us closer to my understanding of the vagus - as a living organism rather than an isolated electrical wire.”
