A little bit of fun at The Big Onion trail ride, starting from Kirkgunzeon (rhyming with big onion), in Dumfriesshire. Trail, lanes and good views over the Solway Firth.

Keeping it simple today, if you have a worry try to categorise it.

Is it REAL - something you can plan for or make practical preparations to deal with?

Is it HYPOTHETICAL - something that might happen, but equally it might not. You can't plan for this.

If you can place your worries in one or other of these zones, it can help you to work out whether to spend energy focusing on the worry.

As a good example, you might worry about a presentation at work.

This is likely a REAL worry. It is likely you can plan and prepare for this to make things a bit better.

Taking this same example, you might worry if your boss thinks your presentation is awful.

This is likely to be a HYPOTHETICAL worry. You cannot know if your boss will think your presentation is awful (regardless of how familiar you are with them). You have to wait and find this out.

The worries you can attend to and plan for - do something about them.
The worries you can't do anything about - accept them for what they are, "uncertainty", "unknown" aspects of life and do your best to place them in a worry zone, or worry time per day. Allow maybe 10mins, or half an hour in the day to worry about these challenging thoughts, and move on with the rest of your day.

A warm welcome to Vicky Begg who is a CBT Therapist now working from The Wellbeing Rooms Bearsden. 👋🏻

Vicky has recently qualified with a post graduate diploma in Counselling & Groupwork in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (DipCBT). Her journey to becoming a therapist has been careful, organic. Some might say, slow. As your counsellor Vicky hopes to bring her learned skills, natural character, and life experiences to help you find a way to better health. The additional skills she holds that are relevant to your therapeutic journey include holding an MSc in Psychology of Sport and the COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills. It’s also important to include skills that set Vicky apart and define her. Vicky is a High Performance Triathlon Coach, a Coach Educator and holds a B Des and MA in Printed Textile Design. Her abilities to think creatively, observe and see you, listen and hear you, to try, fail, succeed and test new experiences have allowed her to see how life can be rich, varied, painful, and as Forrest Gump put it, “Like a box of chocolates.”

Vicky says, "We are individuals and deserve to be treated with care, positivity, and empathy whatever our aims, hopes, and aspirations. We all need support. While my background is in working with people involved in sport, the reasons we have worked together are the same reasons I work with any client; improving your life, empowerment, building self-esteem and confidence, understanding emotions, overcoming difficulties, and bringing clarity to overwhelming or confusing situations. By combining my experiences as a CBT counsellor, with specialist sport psychology knowledge and endurance sports coaching skills we will unlock barriers, carefully unwrap your fears, harness your unique potential, and help you achieve personal, sporting, or professional goals.

During my training to become a CBT Therapist, I found a special interest in working with people with complex conditions such as Autism and ADHD, food-related and eating disorders, menopause, and those recovering from or dealing with trauma. In addition to this, I naturally lean towards helping clients with anxiety-based issues linked to social or performance environments such as competitive and endurance sport, the workplace and professional development."

Vicky offers a free 15-20 minute enquiry. She works with clients in person during the first half of the working week (Monday afternoons to Wednesday morning - see above) and is also happy to work online or telephone.
Please contact Vicky for more details on 07860469737, by email [email protected], and read more about her work and client experiences on her website www.the-sports-counsel.com.
