Over 25,000 runners took on the ASICS Los Angeles Marathon last week.

We asked a few of them:

What mile did it really begin to bite?

The answer was almost unanimous:

Mile 18–22.

It’s not random.
It’s physiological.

When you understand your physiology, you can train and fuel in a way that pushes the wall deeper into the race.

Or avoid it entirely.

Some days you feel unstoppable. Other days, everything feels harder than it should. It’s not random—it’s your cycle.

Your menstrual cycle isn’t just about reproductive health—it’s a metabolic cycle. It influences whether your body prefers burning fat or carbohydrates, how efficiently you clear lactate, and how high-intensity efforts feel.

Some phases prime you for strength, endurance, and peak performance. Others favour steady-state training and recovery.

Understanding these shifts enable you to train smarter, fuel better, and perform at your best, every week of the month.

Pssst, Your Metabolism Isn’t Fixed.

Burn more calories with these three scientifically backed methods:

1. Lift Heavy

Enhance Mitochondrial Density: Regular resistance training not only builds muscle but also significantly increases mitochondrial density within those muscles. This increase in mitochondria enhances your body’s ability to utilise oxygen more effectively, boosting your metabolic rate even when at rest.

2. LISS Cardio

Steady and Sustainable: Low-Intensity Steady-State Cardio (LISS) improves cardiovascular health, enhancing the heart’s ability to pump oxygen more efficiently throughout your body. This steady form of exercise boosts mitochondrial efficiency, contributing to a healthier metabolism over time.

3. Optimise Nutrition

Fuel for Efficiency: A diet rich in iron, vitamin B, and antioxidants supports the blood’s oxygen-carrying capacity and protects mitochondria during oxygen metabolism. Proper nutrition ensures that these powerhouses of your cells function optimally, enhancing energy production at rest.

Empower Your Metabolism: By integrating resistance training, LISS cardio, and strategic nutrition, you can significantly enhance your body’s oxygen use and metabolic efficiency. These changes ensure that your metabolism is optimised, burning energy more effectively even when you’re not actively working out. Start making these changes today and experience a sustained increase in your resting metabolic rate (RMR).

What is Metabolic Testing?

Understanding your body’s energy dynamics is crucial, whether you’re aiming to improve fitness, enhance performance, or simply lead a healthier life. Metabolic testing delves deep into how your body functions, offering insights that help you make informed decisions about your health, nutrition and training.

Resting Metabolism: Measures your calorie burn at rest, establishing a baseline for daily energy needs. Essential for customising your nutritional intake.

Metabolic Flexibility: Assesses your ability to switch between fats and carbohydrates for energy. Greater flexibility supports sustained energy and efficient fuel use.

Metabolic Efficiency: Evaluates how effectively you burn fat during exercise, crucial for endurance and conserving energy over long activities.

Cardiorespiratory Endurance: Determines the intensity at which your body switches from fat to carbohydrate burning during exercise, critical for extending endurance performance.

Cardiorespiratory Performance: Measures the maximum oxygen your body can utilise during intense activity, a key indicator of aerobic capacity and fitness level.

Cardiovascular Recovery: Tracks how quickly your heart rate returns to normal post-exercise, an indicator of cardiovascular health and fitness recovery speed.

Each test provides valuable insights into your body’s capabilities, guiding your training, dietary adjustments, and recovery strategies. Metabolic testing isn’t just for elite athletes; it’s a tool for anyone seeking a clearer understanding of their health and body functionality.

VO2 Max gets all the hype, but it’s only part of the story. Without strong ventilatory thresholds, a high VO2 Max won’t translate to real-world performance.

What are ventilatory thresholds?

VT1 determines how efficiently your body uses oxygen during submaximal efforts. If you can’t use the oxygen VO2 Max provides here, endurance and fat oxidation suffer.

VT2 is where oxygen delivery and lactate clearance collide. A weak VT2 limits your ability to sustain high-intensity efforts, no matter how high your VO2 Max.

Are you focusing on your thresholds, or just chasing VO2 Max numbers?
