SECOND CHANCE SUNDAY
Masking is not always obvious.
In fact, some of the children who are masking the most are often the ones least likely to attract attention.
They may be quiet, polite, compliant, hardworking, and desperate to do the “right” thing. They rarely disrupt lessons, often achieve well, and may even be described as the child who never causes any trouble.
But beneath the surface, they may be working incredibly hard just to get through the school day.
Constantly monitoring themselves, copying others, hiding confusion, suppressing sensory overwhelm, and trying not to stand out can be exhausting.
The real signs often appear later.
A child who held everything together at school may come home emotionally drained, anxious, irritable, withdrawn, or experience meltdowns and shutdowns in the safety of home.
Today’s visual highlights some of the subtle signs that a child may be masking in the classroom.
The quieter the child, the more carefully we sometimes need to look.
Because not every child who is coping well looks calm—and not every calm child is coping well.
