Can CranioSacral Therapy help with persistent post-concussion symptoms?

Meet Dan Baines – an osteopath, former professional dancer - including several years with STOMP, and county-level judoka. Following a significant concussion sustained during competition over 20 years ago, Dan has lived with ongoing post-concussion symptoms that continue to affect his daily life.

Before beginning treatment, Dan completed a series of outcome measures (which neither he nor we have reviewed yet). We do know that his score on the Post-Concussion Symptom assessment places him just one point below the "severe" category, making him an ideal volunteer for this visible case study.

As we continue over coming weeks (6 in total), Dan will receive weekly Upledger CranioSacral Therapy (CST) sessions. We'll then compare his outcome measures and explore what, if anything, has changed.

In this first interview, recorded before Session 1, Dan shares the story of his injury, the symptoms he's experienced for more than two decades, and why he's chosen to take part in this project.
Our second catch up with Dan, one week after his first treatment session, he reflects on what he's noticed so far, including changes in his energy, sleep and day-to-day experience.

If you've ever wondered whether CST may have a role in supporting people living with long-term post-concussion symptoms, follow along as we document Dan's journey. You can watch these on our Youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfV3vEEJ0qc

Please note: This is a single case study exploring one person's experience. Individual outcomes vary, and we'll be sharing the results - whatever they may be - as the project progresses.

🧠💓 Could One Gentle Technique Reset Autonomic Imbalance?
CranioSacral Therapy might hold the key.

A published case study in the Cureus Journal of Medical Science explores how a 39-year-old man suffering from Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)—a form of dysautonomia that spiked after COVID—found lasting relief not from medication, but from osteopathic manual therapy, specifically the CV4 technique (Compression of the Fourth Ventricle).

🌿 What’s compelling?
✅ Symptoms improved after the first CV4 session
✅ Heart rate response normalized over a series of sessions
✅ Symptom-free for over 6 months

This case proposes CranioSacral Therapy as a viable standalone modality for managing neuropathic POTS—an increasingly common challenge in post-COVID patients.

✨ For manual therapists, it’s a powerful reminder: the body has the potential to reset, given the right support.

I had a big bang to the side of my head from walking into a gate, don’t ask🙈, and managed to get treatment the next day which certainly aided in my quick recovery. Thank you Caro 🙏

🧠 One of the biggest myths around concussion
is that you have to be knocked unconscious to have it.

The reality is that most people who experience a concussion never lose consciousness at all.

Which means it's surprisingly easy for symptoms to be missed, dismissed or explained away.

"You're probably just tired - rest up and you’ll feel better soon."

"Maybe you're stressed."

"Give it a few more weeks."

And yet people can still be dealing with headaches, dizziness, brain fog, poor sleep and concentration difficulties long after the original injury.

One of the ways you can help in relieving these symptoms, and hopefully get you back on the track to further recovery is CranioSacral Therapy (CST).

We have therapists all over the country (in fact all over the world!) who may be able to help on a one-to-one basis.

And, if you, or someone you love, is struggling with persistent Post Concussion symptoms that have been hard to help - and you’ve tried a whole list of things to little avail - then maybe you’ll be interested in this:

We’re running a rare, intensive CST programme (over 5 days, this November), where we’ll have multiple sessions, over multiple days, with multiple therapists… We’ve already shown that this can help people with these longer term head injury symptoms.
