IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO FIND YOUR SPORT.

In one week, Laura travels to Manchester to compete at the AWPC World Championships.

She’s 45 years old.
She’s competing at the highest level.

And this is her FIRST SEASON.

🏆 British Champion
🏆 European Champion
🌍 3 World Records

On Monday, she goes after one more title and one more world record.

I’ll say it again for those at the back…

THIS IS HER FIRST SEASON!!!

Coaching Laura has been one of my greatest privileges.

I’ve watched her improve session after session, but what stands out most is that she always wants to know what she can do next to become the best version of herself.

The Laura who steps onto that platform on Monday is a very different person from the Laura who first signed up for coaching with me in September 2023.

And that’s exactly why I wanted to share this.

Don’t let anyone tell you that you’re too old.
Don’t convince yourself that you started too late.

Laura is living proof that when you find something you love, you grab it with both hands and see just how far you can take it.

Keep showing up.
Keep doing the work.
Keep finding out what you’re capable of.

Maybe it’s powerlifting.

Maybe it’s HYROX.

Maybe it’s a marathon.

Maybe it’s your very first 5K.

It doesn’t matter.

You’re capable of more than you think.

And if you don’t quite believe that yet… come down to the gym and I’ll talk some belief into you. 😂

Now there’s just one thing left to do…

LET’S GO LAURA!!!

And if you want to read more about Laura’s incredible journey, she’s only gone and made the FRONT COVER of the latest issue of 𝕃𝕒𝕦𝕟𝕔𝕖𝕤𝕥𝕠𝕟 𝕃𝕚𝕗𝕖 magazine. ❤️

“Laura Higgins - Breaking World Powerlifting Records.”

Not bad for a first season…

Rome… you have been SPECTACULAR!!!

We travel home tomorrow but these images will last forever.

The culture, the history, the beauty.

Blown away.

What a joy to take the girls and my number 1 travel companion Alex Hiscock

Turns out I’m just an embarrassing dad who thinks he’s a gladiator…

Colosseum was great though…

Gladiator energy: 0/10
Tourist energy: 10/10 🇮🇹

DAY 7/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

Today we’re wandering around Rome trying to find bug spray and bite relief because the kids are being eaten alive by mosquitoes.

All while technically having no home in Rome. 😂

We’ve left our original accommodation because the conditions were awful, and we’re now trying to find somewhere suitable to stay at very short notice.

Not quite the relaxing family holiday we imagined…

Thankfully, I got my workout finished early before the chaos properly began.

Not because training is more important than sorting everything out for my family, but because getting it done early gave me some headspace and one small piece of normality when everything else felt completely out of our control.

Training doesn’t solve life’s problems… BUT, sometimes it helps put you in a better position to deal with them.

Workout complete. Now to find some bug spray and a roof over our heads. 😂

DAY 6/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

Today’s plan was:

3 × 8 minutes at tempo effort
2 minutes easy recovery between reps

The splits were actually consistent:

4:31/km
4:36/km
4:29/km

But the temperature and elevation completely changed the session.

What should have been controlled tempo work became a genuinely hard workout—166bpm average, 193bpm maximum and a 4.2 aerobic training effect.

Your body doesn’t know what pace was written on the programme. It only experiences the total demand created by the pace, terrain, temperature, sleep, hydration and accumulated fatigue.

The session was still useful, but it cost more than intended. That means I need to treat it as a hard day and recover accordingly, rather than pretending it was controlled simply because I completed the prescribed reps.

10km done. Now it’s time to hydrate, refuel and get on with enjoying the rest of the day in Rome. 🇮🇹

Day 6 complete. ✅

DAY 5/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

Today’s work:

💪 60-minute strength session
🏊 1,000m in the pool
🌭 One hot dog and fries
💡 Some absolutely heroic bathroom lighting 😂

There’s no gym here, I don’t have my usual equipment and the food options aren’t always ideal. But, none of that means the day is wasted.

Locking in doesn’t require every workout, meal or decision to be perfect.

One hot dog and fries won’t ruin my progress, just as one workout won’t magically create it. The result will come from the average of what I do across the full 99 days.

Today I trained with what was available, got some useful swimming volume completed and enjoyed food with my family.

That’s good enough.

Do the best you can with what you have, then go again tomorrow.

Day 5 complete. ✅

DAY 4/99 - LOCKED IN 🔒

It’s 8:25am and I’m just back from 10km around Rome before breakfast. 🇮🇹

The plan was an easy run, but the hills made it harder than expected.

That’s a useful reminder that the session written on the programme and the session your body actually experiences aren’t always the same thing.

Pace doesn’t determine intensity on its own. Hills, heat, fatigue and unfamiliar terrain all contribute to the overall load.

This ended up slightly harder than intended, so there’s no need to force anything else today. The plan now is breakfast, plenty of food and hydration, then some very easy swimming while we enjoy the pool.

A solid run completed and the rest of the day is about recovering from it.

Day 4 underway. ✅

11 HYROX RACES. SAME SHOES. BOUGHT THEM AGAIN. 👟

There are loads of debates about the “best” shoe for HYROX.

For me, it’s the Saucony Endorphin Pro 4.

My old pair have now been through 11 HYROX races, plus plenty of training.

When it finally came time to replace them…

I bought the exact same shoe again.

Same model.
Same colourway. 😂

Why?

🏃 Carbon plated and genuinely quick on the runs.

🛷 Enough grip for the sleds - and the second photo shows just how well that outsole has held up.

🏐 Stable enough that I’m comfortable doing lunges, carries and wall balls in them.

↪️ I feel confident changing direction through the Roxzone rather than feeling like I’m balancing on an aggressive super shoe.

👟 And most importantly, I completely forget about them when I’m racing.

For a HYROX shoe, I think that’s massively underrated.

You need something that’s fast enough to run hard in, but HYROX isn’t an 8km road race.

You’ve also got to push and pull sleds, jump, lunge, carry, row, ski and somehow survive 100 wall balls.

The Endorphin Pro 4 just seems to sit in that sweet spot for me.

Are they the best HYROX shoe?

That’s subjective.

But 11 races later, when it came to spending my own money on another pair, I bought exactly the same ones.

That’s probably the best review I can give them. 👟🔥
