If your cervical screening results show that you have HPV, you might have some questions about what that means for your relationship.

Having HPV does not mean that someone has been unfaithful. HPV can stay dormant in your body without being detected, it is possible that you got it years or even decades ago but never knew you had it. You can get HPV if you have ever had any kind of s*xual contact, and from just one s*xual experience.

There is no official guidance that you should tell anyone if you have HPV. It’s your personal choice if you tell any s*xual partners. Remember that HPV is extremely common and usually harmless. 8 in 10 people will get at some point during their lives.

9 out of 10 times the immune system is able to clear the virus within two years, but if it lingers, that is when it can develop into cell changes and can lead to certain cancers. This process can take years or decades. If you’re in a relationship, your partner has likely already been exposed. There’s no test for them (unless they are due their cervical screening) and no treatment for the virus itself.

HPV is passed on through skin-to-skin s*xual contact. This includes s*xual touch, oral, vaginal and a**l s*x, and sharing s*x toys. Barrier methods (e.g. condoms) are helpful at reducing the risk of transmission but won’t completely stop HPV from spreading as they don't cover the whole area. Even if you do have HPV, the chances of you or your partner developing cancer are very low – but it’s important to be aware of the signs and symptoms, just in case. There are some things you can do to reduce your or their risk of developing cervical cancer from HPV.

Practice Update: Team Changes at Laurencekirk
We are preparing for some upcoming changes to our clinical team over the next month, and wanted to share an update with our patients.

Thank You to Dr Pirie
At the end of August, our long term Locum, Dr Pirie, will be moving on from his regular shifts with us. We want to say a huge thank you to Dr Pirie for his incredible dedication and care over the last few years. While Dr Pirie is finishing his regular sessions, this isn't a final goodbye, he will still be working with us occasionally in the future to cover holidays and busy periods, so you will still see him around the Practice from time to time!

Welcome to Dr Warren Brownlee
Following this, we are delighted to share that Dr Brownlee will be joining our practice team as a permanent GP from 17th August.

Dr Brownlee has a background in all aspects of general practice and is really looking forward to settling into the area, getting to know our patients, and looking after you and your families.
