If you’re in your 50s, this one’s for you.

You may have seen in the news today that new figures show people aged 54 are the least likely to complete their NHS bowel screening test. Just 56% return their kit, compared with almost 74% of 74-year-olds.

If you’re invited for bowel screening, don’t ignore it or save it for another day.

The test is quick, free and can be done in the privacy of your own home. Most importantly, it can detect signs of bowel cancer before you notice any symptoms, when treatment is often simpler and more successful.

When your kit arrives:

📮 Put it by the loo.
✔ Do the test.
📬 Pop it back in the post.

A few minutes could make all the difference.

Are you in your 50s? Make a promise to yourself: when your bowel screening kit arrives, complete it and send it back the same week.

A Red Heat Health Alert will be in place from 1am on Wednesday (24 June) until 11pm on Thursday (25 June).

Many people will welcome the warmer weather, but when temperatures remain very high for several days it is important to take simple steps to stay safe and well.

Stay safe by:
💧 Drinking plenty of water
🏠 Keeping your home as cool as possible
🌳 Avoiding direct sun during the hottest part of the day
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Checking in on older relatives, neighbours and friends
⚠️ Knowing the signs of heat exhaustion

Many people feel nervous about going — whether you’ve just been invited or haven’t been for some time — and support is available:

- Ask for a female doctor or nurse
- Bring someone with you
- Talk to your GP practice or local sexual health clinic about any concerns beforehand

Please be aware that the half day closure has been arranged by the Essex ICB and applies to all surgeries in the Essex area.

We will re-open at 08.00am on Wednesday 17th June 2026
