Summer changes everything – routine, diet, sleep, and for many people, their digestive symptoms too.

Bloating is one of the most commonly reported gastrointestinal complaints, and the holiday season tends to make it worse. Social media is full of supplements and quick fixes, but a December 2025 clinical commentary published in GI and Hepatology News noted a shift in clinical thinking – moving away from treating bloating as a single symptom toward identifying the underlying cause first, because without that, any treatment is largely guesswork.

Our latest article looks at what the evidence actually says about over-the-counter bloating remedies, and when persistent or recurring bloating warrants a proper assessment rather than another trip to the pharmacy.

"I'll deal with it after my holiday" is one of the most common things surgeons hear about hernias. But a hernia will not heal on its own, and the symptoms rarely stay quiet for long.

The good news is that recovery from laparoscopic hernia repair is often quicker than people expect. Many patients are back to normal activities within one to two weeks, meaning treatment several weeks ahead of a trip is realistic for many.

Bowel cancer treatment is becoming more personalised, and a recent UK led study shows just how much progress is being made.

The NEOPRISM CRC trial looked at patients with a specific type of bowel cancer known as mismatch repair deficient (dMMR) colore**al cancer. Researchers tested whether giving immunotherapy before surgery, rather than the traditional route of surgery followed by chemotherapy, could improve outcomes.

The results were striking. Many patients had an exceptional response to a short course of immunotherapy, and remained free from cancer recurrence during the three year follow up period.

If you've ever wondered whether your digestive symptoms are IBS or something else, you're not alone. It's one of the most common concerns we hear at the Warwick Bowel and Hernia Clinic.

IBS is a disorder of gut-brain interaction: the bowel looks structurally normal but functions differently. Symptoms tend to fluctuate, influenced by stress, hormones, and diet. But progressively worsening symptoms, such as re**al bleeding, unexplained weight loss, or pain that wakes you at night, deserve a closer look.

Our latest article explains the key differences between IBS, IBD, and bowel cancer, and when it's time to seek assessment.

Did you know that simply sitting for long periods can slow your bowel down? When we're inactive, the natural muscular contractions that keep digestion moving can become sluggish. This can increase the risk of constipation, bloating, and haemorrhoids over time.

Small changes make a real difference. Getting up every 30–60 minutes, walking after meals, and staying well hydrated can all help keep your bowel healthy.

Haemorrhoids are one of the most common conditions we see, and for many patients the most frustrating part is when they keep returning.

Recurrence is often linked to ongoing pressure within the lower re**um. Constipation, straining, low fibre intake, and prolonged sitting can all play a role, and unless these underlying factors are addressed, symptoms are likely to come back.

In our latest article, Mr Stellakis looks at why haemorrhoids recur, what lifestyle changes can help break the cycle, and which treatments may offer a more lasting solution.

Weight loss medications like Wegovy are helping many people take control of their health. But did you know they can also affect your bowel?

Drugs like semaglutide slow digestion, which can lead to constipation, bloating, nausea, and other changes in bowel habits. Research suggests around 1 in 4 people taking semaglutide experience constipation. Left unmanaged, this can lead to further discomfort.

Read our helpful guide explaining what's happening in your gut, and what to do if symptoms become a problem.
