Why Do Older People Feel the Cold So Much More?
Ever noticed how some older adults feel cold even when everyone else is comfortable? It’s not just a preference - there are real changes in the body that make staying warm more difficult with age.
As we get older, the body produces less heat because metabolism slows down. Blood circulation also becomes less efficient, especially to the hands and feet, which means warmth doesn’t spread through the body as easily. On top of that, thinning skin and reduced body fat make it harder to retain heat. In some cases, health conditions or medications can also increase sensitivity to cold.
The result? Even mild chilly environments can feel uncomfortable or even draining for older people.
💡 What can help?
✔ Keep indoor spaces warm and draft-free
✔ Encourage layered clothing (especially thermal wear)
✔ Offer warm drinks regularly throughout the day
✔ Support gentle movement to improve circulation
✔ Make sure meals are calorie-rich and nutritious to help maintain energy and body warmth
✔ Pay attention to early signs of discomfort
Small daily changes can make a big difference in comfort, wellbeing, and overall quality of life.

Meet Danielle - New Age Care’s New Live-In Care Manager!

We are delighted to welcome Danielle to the New Age Care team and know she will make an incredible difference to everyone she supports.

Danielle’s journey into care began with a deeply personal mission. After her great-aunt was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Danielle spent her time after college helping her remain independent at home. Through this experience, she discovered the comfort, purpose, and fulfilment that comes from making a positive difference in someone’s life - and a lifelong passion for care was born.

Since then, Danielle has built an impressive career across a variety of care settings, including care homes, home care services, rehabilitation units, and hospitals. Throughout her journey, she has gained experience in almost every role within the sector, from Carer and Senior Carer to Care Coordinator and Administration Manager.

For the past six years, Danielle has specialised in leading diverse teams while developing extensive expertise in holistic care planning, risk assessment, recruitment, finance, and project development.

With her warm, approachable, and supportive nature, we know both our team and our valued live-in care service users will be in excellent hands.

In Danielle’s own words:
“I am looking forward to working with the amazing team at New Age Care and supporting our beloved live-in care service users and care team.”

We couldn’t be happier to have you on board. Welcome to the team, Danielle!

Exciting News from New Age Care!

We are delighted to announce that New Age Care has enrolled in the National Dementia Care Accreditation Scheme (NaDCAS) – a nationally recognised programme designed to support and recognise excellence in dementia care.

Developed in partnership with Care England, University College London's Dementia Training Academy, and leading UK universities including Bradford, Worcester, Stirling and Exeter, NaDCAS is setting the benchmark for outstanding dementia care across the UK.

Over the next 26 weeks, we will work through a comprehensive programme that assesses and strengthens every aspect of the dementia care we provide. From understanding each individual and building meaningful relationships to enhancing staff training, leadership and organisational culture, this journey is all about delivering the very best outcomes for the people we support.

With around two-thirds of people living with dementia remaining in their own homes, the demand for high-quality specialist homecare continues to grow. By investing in this accreditation, we're demonstrating our commitment to providing compassionate, evidence-based dementia care that gives families, commissioners and our community confidence.

We're also proud to be the first homecare provider in the West Midlands to undertake the NaDCAS accreditation programme, reinforcing our commitment to leading the way in exceptional dementia care.

This isn't simply about achieving an accreditation, it's about continually improving the lives of people living with dementia and ensuring our care reflects the highest national standards.
We look forward to sharing our progress with you over the coming months as we continue this exciting journey.

In the video "When a Loved One Is Silent What You Might Be Missing", our Director Samantha Whittaker explores what could really be going on behind the sudden shift. It could be hidden physical pain they struggle to put into words, early signs of depression, frustration over losing their independence, or quiet anxieties about family and finances.

We have to put ourselves in their shoes. If you notice a shift, don't ignore it. Look closer, think about the person behind the silence, and talk to them. Communication is everything.

Did you know that the way you sleep could play a powerful role in how well you age?

Recent research suggests that maintaining a consistent sleep pattern, going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, may boost your chances of healthy aging by up to 18%! That means better physical health, improved mental wellbeing, and a higher quality of life as the years go on.

It’s not just about getting enough sleep, it’s about getting it regularly. Irregular sleep schedules can disrupt your body’s natural rhythm, impacting everything from your immune system to your mood.

At New Age Care, we believe that small daily habits can make a big difference. Supporting those in our care to maintain healthy routines, including good sleep hygiene, is just one of the ways we help promote long-term wellbeing. 💙

Why not start tonight? Set a consistent bedtime, create a calming routine, and give your body the rest it deserves.

Many people wonder whether Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are connected - and the answer is: yes, but they are not the same condition.

Both are progressive neurological disorders, meaning they worsen over time and affect the brain. However, they impact different areas and functions:
Alzheimer’s disease mainly affects memory, thinking, and behaviour. It is the most common cause of dementia.

Parkinson’s disease primarily affects movement, causing symptoms such as tremors, stiffness, and slowed motion.

Despite these differences, there is overlap. Some people with Parkinson’s may develop memory and thinking problems over time, while Alzheimer’s can sometimes affect movement in later stages.

Both conditions involve the loss of brain cells and share certain biological processes, which is why researchers continue to explore their connection.

Why this matters:
Understanding these conditions helps families recognise symptoms early and seek the right care and support - improving quality of life for loved ones.

At New Age Care, we provide compassionate, tailored support for individuals living with neurological conditions, ensuring dignity, comfort, and independence every step of the way.

If you or a loved one need support, we’re here to help.
