It was great to see representation from our Respiratory Physiology team at this year’s Association of Respiratory Technology and Physiology (ARTP) conference which was held in Belfast!

The team had a great few days developing their knowledge on national initiatives in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology, networking with colleagues across the nation and showcasing work in the department here at Leeds.

Josh Edwards presented on spirometry quality and Dan Grant presented on Mannitol Challenge testing. In addition, Tania Abab received her certification for professional examinations (ARTP practitioner award) and Josh received his Scientist Training Programme certificate.

Well done all!

Last week colleagues from Cardiology were invited to Pudsey Primrose Hill Primary school to talk to Year 5 and 6 children about working in the NHS.

Each person shared their role, what it involves and why they enjoy it. The main message was that they are a team and no one person can do their role without the others.

The children were very engaged and asked lots of interesting a thought provoking questions. Thank you to Pudsey Primrose Hill Primary School for having us - we hope we've inspired the next generation of the NHS!

Earlier this month, Miss Shafra Mubarak, Cardiac Surgery SpR, successfully organised an Aortic Valve Simulation Wetlab Course for Doctors and Allied Health Professionals.

With a well-informed team contributing to better patient care, the course offered practical education to improve understanding of aortic valve surgery across the multidisciplinary team.

Our clinicians pride themselves on being at the forefront of technology, innovation and research and are often invited to share their knowledge and research at national and international conferences. Earlier this month, a number of colleagues were invited to present at the British Cardiovascular Society Conference 2026.

Dr Mohammad Haris, Cardiology SpR and British Heart Foundation PhD Fellow, took to the main stage to deliver a presentation on the subject of cardiometabolic disease, taking the opportunity to talk about stents. Well done!

Dr Wazir Baig also spoke on the management of syndromic aortopathies. Dr Baig retired at the start of this year after more than two decades in Leeds, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of having led both the infective endocarditis and aortopathy services. This invited talk marked what was probably his final contribution as a physician. Enjoy your retirement Waz!

Congratulations to Dr Olly Brown, Cardiology SpR, who has been elected as the President of the British Junior Cardiologists’ Association (BJCA)! Dr Brown also won the Young Investigator Award At the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) annual conference.

We're also pleased to announce that Leeds Teaching Hospitals has also been voted as the best Teaching Hospitals Trust in the UK by Registrars in the BJCA. This is a testament to the department’s commitment to delivering excellence in training, despite the considerable demands on the service. Thank you to all those that contribute.
