Are the sibling fights worse than ever right now?

Neurodivergent children often have highly specific sensory thresholds. When siblings are forced together 24/7 during the summer, one child's vocal stimming might be the exact trigger for the other child's auditory sensitivity.

It isn't a behavioural issue; it is a clashing of sensory profiles.

Separate rooms. Headphones. Different activities. You do not have to force family time if it causes a meltdown. 🎧

The local parks are swarming and your kids need to burn off energy.

📍 Otley Chevin, West Yorkshire

Skip the crowded playgrounds. The Chevin offers rugged, uneven terrain. Walking up steep, rocky paths provides massive amounts of proprioceptive input (heavy work for the muscles and joints).

This is the neurological equivalent of a reset button. Let them climb, tire their bodies out, and bypass the playground politics entirely. 🌲👇

"They won't even put their shoes on to go for an ice cream. They are just being defiant."

No, they are exhibiting demand avoidance. When a neurodivergent nervous system is utterly exhausted, which happens by week three of the summer holidays, even "fun" demands feel like a threat.

Stop negotiating. Lower the demands to absolute zero. Pyjamas all day is a valid sensory strategy. 🛑

The schools are closed, but we are not.

In fact, July and August are the perfect times to start Occupational Therapy. Without the exhausting daily demands of the classroom draining their energy, children actually have the capacity to engage, learn self-regulation tools, and build their motor skills.

Do not wait for the September crisis. Use the summer reset to build a stronger foundation.

We have a handful of daytime assessment slots left for August.

“You have a whole playroom full of toys. Just go and play!”

If this instruction usually results in your child staring blankly or tearing the room apart in frustration, stop saying it.

Unstructured time is terrifying if you struggle with Executive Function. Initiating a task, deciding what to play with, and planning how to do it requires complex brain coordination. Without a plan, they panic.

They don't need more toys. They need a visual timetable for the living room; start an activity with them and model it. Give them structure, even in July. 🗓️

"They'll calm down once we get to the beach."

Maybe, but you have to survive the airport first.

Airports are the ultimate sensory assault course: harsh fluorescent lights, echoing announcements, unpredictable queues, and security alarms. A meltdown at the departure gate is not a tantrum about waiting; it is a nervous system crashing.

Noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses indoors, and a heavy backpack for deep pressure (proprioception) are not luxuries for travel. They are essential medical equipment. Pack them first. ✈️

You can also contact the airport and ask for special assistance; this can reduce queuing and also (sometimes) provide a golf cart to get you from A to B.

Did you know William Merritt Centre, located in Rodley, offers a fantastic Tryb4uFly service? They have a mock-up of an aeroplane fuselage to help individuals and families with disabilities or long-term conditions practice transferring, seating, and using supportive equipment before booking a real flight!
