Do You Judge People Too Quickly?

Sometimes we decide very quickly that someone isn’t “our kind of person”. But those first impressions can make our social world smaller.

How putting people in boxes can make your social world smaller.

Teenagers used to spend hours glued to their phones. Parents and grandparents used to complain about it. That was the status quo.

Only recently did I realise this is no longer true.

Smartphone addiction caught up with everyone, even those who campaigned against it.

When did grandparents start doomscrolling?

No generation entered the world fully prepared for what smartphones would come to offer. Different generations entered at different points.

Sometimes I wonder whether growing up as a millennial, while technology gradually improved around me, was actually an advantage.

I was part of the generation that grew up before smartphones and then gradually learned to use them. Each new tool, app or trick that was invented appeared right in front of me. I had time to adapt.

Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t make phones less addictive for us. But sometimes it feels as though we had time to adjust to the gradual rise of features designed to hold our attention.

What once seemed like a problem affecting young people now touches every generation. I don’t think any person or generation can be blamed for it. This is simply evidence of how powerful these devices are.

We probably see more advice and motivational messages than ever before. TikTok, podcasts, books, articles, YouTube - everyone is telling you what to do. But one person’s solution can become another person’s problem.
Here is my new post, featuring two woolly pigs who didn’t ask for productivity advice.

Why advice that changed someone else’s life may make yours worse.

When did social media stop being social, and what does Instagram's new design reveal about changes in our attention, culture and mental health?

A short reflection on what happens when healthy advice turns unhealthy and wellness becomes an endless optimisation game.

When healthy advice turns unhealthy, mental health tools start to feel stressful, and wellness becomes an endless optimisation game.

W**e is healthy again. Apparently.

A new study suggests w**e may slow biological ageing in men. Sounds exciting. Until you read past the headline. I had a closer look at the study and wrote a short article.

The short version: interesting ideas, tempting conclusion, but a lot more ambiguity than the headline suggests.

The deeper you go into it, the less it looks like a story about w**e and the more it looks like a story about lifestyle, statistics, and wishful thinking.

A new study suggests w**e may slow biological ageing in men. So w**e is good for you. Again. Right up until you read past the headlines.

Why can rest sometimes feel harder than work? And why does time off not always feel as restful as we expect?
