For effective positioning and attachment at the breast, CHIN is the way forward ⭐️

Close: baby needs to be close to you so he can scoop enough breast into his mouth. Ensure clothing and hands are not in the way.

Head free: when attaching to the breast, the baby will tilt his head back to allow his chin to lead as he comes onto the breast. Even a finger on the back of the baby’s head will prevent this important movement.

In line: the baby’s head and body should be in alignment so that he does not have to twist his neck, which would make feeding and swallowing difficult.

Nose to ni**le: with your ni**le resting below baby’s nose, he will begin to root. As he tilts his head back, the ni**le will slip under his top lip upwards and backwards to rest between the hard and soft palate.

I will be doing a whole session on feeding in the Bloom Antenatal Course to enable you to feel confident throughout your feeding journey 💛 Book online now for courses in Headingley and Boston Spa 👏🏼

On your back madam 👇🏼

It has been sad to hear about the news of the Queen in the past 24hours and a day of reflection. But, with the new King coming to the throne, it made me think of another 17th century King who was alleged to be a key figure in influencing a particular birth position.

The myth suggests that King Louis 14th had a fe**sh for watching women give birth and required that they do so lying on their back so that he could have an unobstructed view 😎 Standard practices at the time- including kneeling, squatting or sitting upright- obstructed the King’s view, so he supposedly requested that women give birth lying flat on their backs. And the rest is history!

Birthing women of today can choose to deliver in any position and as midwives we encourage active birth positions such as standing, kneeling, squatting on land or in water 💧 These positions widen the diameter of the pelvis, make labour progress quicker and allow the woman freedom and control over her birthing experience.

Come join me in one of my Bloom Antenatal Classes to learn more about active birth 💪🏼

Gorgeous hat my girl, but please can I use it for my engorged breasts? 🥬

(Breast engorgement = hot, painful, full, shiny breasts where the milk does not flow easily 😬)

Savoy cabbage leaves have been used for many many years to relieve the symptoms of breast engorgement. Research has shown that placing a chilled Savoy cabbage leaf inside your bra over the breast for 10-15 minutes can sooth the breast pain 👏🏼

To reduce the risk of engorgement make sure you’re emptying your breasts regularly and ensuring that baby has a good attachment to the breast.

Behold the mighty tennis ball- an essential for reducing labour pain 👏🏼

Research has shown that sacral massage (the lower back) in labour has the following incredible effects:

✋🏼 reducing labour pain
✋🏼reducing anxiety levels
✋🏼leads to greater levels of maternal satisfaction in labour

And the best way for birthing partners to perform this sacral massage is…with a tennis ball 🎾 You can apply just the right amount of pressure on the sacrum in labour with this and it reduces hand cramp when massage is prolonged.

An absolute essential piece of equipment for labour ❤️

Sharing The Pain ☺️

Among the Huichol Indians, the father traditionally sat above his labouring wife in the rafters of the hut, with a rope tied round his testicles. When his partner felt a painful contraction she would tug on the rope, so that he too would experience the pain which would bring new life.

Fascinating right?!

Luckily for partners of today, there are different ways to get involved in supporting the birthing woman ❤️
I’ll be discussing the role of birth partners and much more at my Bloom Antenatal Classes- come join us 🫶🏼

To reuse or not to reuse, that is the question.

I’ll be looking at the pros and cons of using reusable nappies and demonstrating how to use them from birth onwards, in the last session of the Bloom Antenatal course.
I personally used them for both my daughters during the lockdown when disposable nappies were like gold dust! I loved using them, particularly when the girls were both fully weaned and doing solid stools which could just be plopped into the loo from the reusable pads. It’s a great way to save money in the longterm, especially if you use the nappies for subsequent babies/children and they look adorable!

According to the Little Lamb website, NHS paediatricians suggest newborns should be changed 10-12 times a day and older babies about six times ending 2 ½ to 3 years later with just one used at night. Assuming an average of seven changes every 24 hours over baby’s nappy wearing career and you’ll use about 6500 nappies.

Check out the price of quality disposables in your local shop and multiply by six and a half thousand. As an estimate if you choose to use disposable nappies you will be looking at spending around £1000 for each baby.

To compare, add the cost of cloth nappy kits to the cost of laundering of £1 a week and you’ll immediately see the savings. Using them on subsequent babies will save you even more.

What are your experiences of using reusable nappies??
