You are allowed to rest, and this too is part of your healing. Sometimes it can be the hardest bit.

Today is leave the office early day. Maybe today is a good day to start.

Children who have their mental, emotional and physical needs attended to adequately, and don't suffer any significant trauma in their childhoods, go on to be well-rounded, resilient, and often successful individuals.

Those who have any of those elements missing or inadequately addressed will likely face some struggles in their adult lives. These children become many of the adults that I end up seeing in my practice.

Some suffering in life is avoidable, but it takes a massive shift in cultural attitudes and stories to make things different. This is why observance days like today, International Children's Day, matter.

I don't profess to know all the answers to how these issues should be addressed, but I do know I'd like to contribute to the change if I can.

Stories are just for children!

Now that's an iffy narrative if ever I heard one!

May is National Share a Story month in the UK. This annual celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing is largely aimed at kids. But I personally don't see why the adults have to miss out.

In March I embarked on the Welsh Whisperers Storytelling course, led by the fabulous Mair Tomos Ifans and the Dragon Storytellers. This Friday, I will be taking to the spotlight for my first-ever storytelling performance 😬 along with my fellow classmates.

If you want to come along and support us, you will find us at at 7pm on Friday, 29th May. Tickets are available here https://www.theatryddraig.cymru/events/storytelling-with-the-dragon-storytellers

Healing doesn't happen all at once, it happens mostly in little moments.

Stop, take a minute to look around you. What can you appreciate in this moment?

Our systems are hardwired to notice the challenges of life, and actually pay very little attention to the good.

The other morning while walking, I was ruing my decision to set my National Walking Month target, because I was having to walk in the rain. I was faced with the dilemma of staying relatively dry, but overheating, or being at a comfortable temperature but getting wet. Neither prospect filled me with joy, I was feeling very curmudgeonly.

So I paused. I took a moment to remind myself that, although some of my experience was less than pleasant in that moment, there were things I could appreciate happening at exactly the same time.

This exercise in choosing where to place my attention was not about getting the good to override the bad, but about reminding myself that there is balance, that I do have agency, and that there is something in pretty much every day that lifts me.

I think sometimes when the rain of life is coming down around you, it can be really important to have these little moments where you remind yourself that it's not all bad.

If you want a little moment of pause today, whack the sound up on this video. Listen to those birds singing, and the sound of the rain falling, and see if you can find some joy in that too, just like I did the other day.

For any of you who are wondering how it's going - I'm thoroughly enjoying National Walking Month.

100 miles sounds like a lot, but broken down into daily bursts, I'm approaching my target faster than intended.

The accountability of making this a public challenge rather than keeping it to myself has been useful for keeping me on track, but gradually over the course of the month, that sense of accountability has shifted more towards my relationship with myself. It feels easier to do this for me now than it did when I first embarked on the challenge.

Shifting our relationship to ourselves is often some of the deepest work we will do, and so key in making change in psychotherapy. I am literally walking my talk πŸ˜‚

Sometimes it can be hard to open up to other people, it can feel too exposing, too vulnerable, too unsafe.

But did you know that bees have been, and in some places still are, considered to be great listeners?

The Celts considered them to be messengers between us and the realm of spirit, and beekeepers across Europe have kept this tradition of bees being messengers alive for hundreds of years by 'telling the bees'.

This involves the beekeeper treating their bees as extended members of their own family and keeping them informed of any family news in the household, or events worthy of speaking about, or sometimes even just getting things off their chests.

Now, you may not be a beekeeper, but our world is full of these amazing creatures, so they are not hard to find. Just head to your nearest patch of flowers, and you will see the space is a thrumming hive of activity.

You too can tell the bees!

Before you dismiss this as frivolous nonsense (that is if you don't hold similar beliefs to the ancient Celts), hear me out...

Your nervous system does not know the difference between you talking to a bee and feeling relaxed because you're standing in the sunshine, taking in the sights and sounds, listening to the buzzing and the chirruping of the birds, and you telling a trusted human being about what is going on for you. It just perceives that you are engaged in a social activity, and that you have a lot of cues of safety around you. Telling the bees can feel highly therapeutic.

Give it a go and see how it impacts you.
