It's five years today since Millie Wright died and her memory continues to make a difference here at Leeds Children's Hospital, through the Millie Wright Children’s Charity.

Since 2022, the charity has raised more than £500,000, funded thousands of hours of family support, provided Saturday Suppers to at least 10,000 families, and helped improve the hospital experience for countless children and parents here in Leeds.

Thank you to Millie’s family and everyone who supports this incredible work.

Did you know we have around 900 Globally Trained Nurses working in our hospitals? These are nurses who trained in other countries, and have now brought their skills and experience to the UK.

Meet Erasmus. He originally trained as a nurse in Ghana and joined us in 2021. Recently, he was recognised with our Teamwork and Excellence Award at our Globally Trained Nurses Conference.
Erasmus said of his award:

“It is both a great honour and a humbling experience. It’s a reminder that hard work, perseverance and compassion do not go unnoticed.”

Erasmus highlights that working in Leeds has broadened his clinical perspective, and challenged him to grow both professionally and personally. He believes globally trained nurses add tremendous value to healthcare teams by bringing diverse perspectives, resilience and knowledge gained from working in different healthcare systems.

Congratulations, Erasmus, and thank you for your dedication, compassion and excellence.

We are holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 23 September 2026, from 3.30–5pm in the Gledhow Wing seminar rooms at St James’s Hospital.

Members of the Trust Board will share updates on the highlights, challenges and improvements of the year April 2025 to March 2026. This will be in person, but we will also have videos of the key information available on our website shortly after.

We're counting down to the 10th anniversary celebration of the BME Staff Network, and our colleagues have been sharing their highlights.

Gamu is a business manager and says: “I am proud every day to be part of this journey. Being part of the first groups of two of the main programmes, which focused on mentoring and career progression, was life changing for me. They helped me find my confidence and recognise the value of my experiences. Watching people grow in confidence, feel represented, and speak up has been inspiring. Rachel and Tahsin have been part of our Future You apprenticeship, a fully-funded opportunity to progress from Clinical Support Worker to Registered Nurse here at Leeds.

It’s a great way to learn on the job, supporting career development, while helping to build our future nursing workforce.

Aji, one of our Bereavement Nurses, explains why your feedback matters:

“As a Bereavement Nurse, I know how important compassionate end-of-life care is for patients and their loved ones. The NACEL Bereavement Survey gives families a valuable opportunity to share their experiences, helping us learn, improve, and ensure we provide the best possible care and support during such an important time.”

We are taking part in the National Audit of Care at the End of Life (NACEL), which looks at the care people receive at the end of their lives in hospitals across England and Wales.

Hearing from families, carers and loved ones is invaluable. Your feedback helps us understand what we do well, where we can improve, and how we can continue providing high-quality, compassionate care and support for patients and those closest to them.
