So yesterday David completed the Leeds Half Marathon 1:39:10 🏃‍♂️

A result I’m really pleased with, especially considering the training build-up was a little different this time around. Running mileage has been relatively modest over the last 6–7 weeks, very rarely getting above 20 miles per week, but I’ve consistently included two strength sessions in the gym each week alongside the running.

It’s another reminder that training doesn’t always have to mean huge mileage. A sensible balance of running load, strength work, recovery and consistency can still produce good performances.

As for the event itself, I thought the Leeds Half Marathon was superbly organised from start to finish. The crowd support around the course was absolutely incredible — possibly the best I’ve experienced in terms of both atmosphere and numbers.

A couple of standout spectator signs included:
😂 “Don’t be sh*t”
😂 “Don’t trust that fart”

Brilliant encouragement at exactly the right moments!

Yes, the course is a little hilly, but certainly nothing too extreme, and overall it’s just a fantastic race experience. I’d highly recommend it to anybody considering stepping up to a half marathon.

🏃‍♂️ Málaga Half Marathon – Done! 🇪🇸

Race day is behind me, and I crossed the line in 1:38:12.

On the plus side, that’s a 2-minute improvement on last year, so progress is definitely there. That said, it wasn’t quite the sub-1:35 I was hoping for. I struggled to hold the required pace through the second half, lost some time, and only started to feel a bit more like myself again over the final couple of miles.

I’ll be honest — I felt a little disappointed afterwards. But perspective helps… and so do tapas and a few well-earned beers, which more than made up for it 🍻🍤😄.

All things considered, it’s another solid step forward, lessons learned, and motivation firmly intact. I’m already looking ahead to the next half marathon challenge, where hopefully I can shave off a bit more time and keep pushing the boundaries.

Thanks to everyone who followed along, encouraged me, and kept me accountable along the way 🙌

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 10 ☀️
1 week to go!
Well… Week 10 wasn’t quite the confidence-booster I’d hoped for. The hip flexor ni**le from last week refused to settle, and during a planned 6-mile run I made the sensible decision to cut things short at 5 miles. Since then, I’ve only done a cautious 1-mile tester at the weekend — the good news is it felt fine, so hopefully that’s a promising sign! 🤞
Not exactly ideal timing one week out from race day, but the miles are in the bank, and sometimes that’s all you can rely on.
To keep things moving (without aggravating the hip), I finally joined a gym and swapped some running sessions for cross-training — a mix of cycling, rowing, and some light leg strength work. Nothing crazy, just enough to keep the engine ticking over.
This coming week will be a quiet one: a short run or two if things behave themselves, plus a couple of light gym sessions. Then it’s all eyes on Sunday…🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞
Here’s hoping for sunshine in Málaga and a happy hip on race day! ☀️🇪🇸
Update to follow after the run… stay tuned!

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 9 🏃‍♂️

Week 9 done and dusted, and that’s another 24 miles in the bank over 4 runs. The weekend was a busy one, featuring a parkrun with my son (always a great way to start a Saturday!) and then the Leeds Abbey Dash 10km on Sunday.

I aimed to run the 10km at my intended half marathon pace, and I’m pleased to say it went really well — felt strong throughout and even had plenty left in the tank at the finish. A reassuring sign with race day getting closer!

I’ve had a bit of hip flexor tightness this week, so there’s been lots of stretching, foam rolling, and general grimacing involved… but oddly enough, it felt absolutely fine during the race. Bodies are weird.

Only 2 weeks to go now — one more long run left before taper time and then Málaga awaits! ☀️🇪🇸

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 8 💨
Week 8 done and the miles are firmly in the bank! Another 28 miles completed this week, keeping the momentum going and cementing the increased mileage from recent weeks.
Saturday’s longer run brought 7 miles around (hoped-for) race pace, and thankfully the legs were feeling good… even if the energy levels started dipping towards the end. Safe to say it's becoming clear that I need to give a bit more thought to my fueling strategy!
This coming week the plan is to keep the mileage strong and round it off with the Leeds Abbey Dash 10km on Sunday. It should be a great chance to get some proper race-paced miles in and see exactly where I’m at with the training.
Only 3 weeks to go now to Malaga, I can almost tast the tapas!!
Everything still seems to be on track — fingers crossed it stays that way!

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 7 🌧️💨

Another week done — and another step closer to Málaga! Week 7 went well, and I managed to up the mileage to 29 miles, spread across 4 runs.

The highlight (or maybe the lowlight depending on how you feel about soggy miles!) was a 12-miler on Saturday morning in the pouring rain. The weather has definitely been throwing its own challenges into the mix recently, but I’m trying to embrace the unpredictability… character building, right? 😅

The long run finished with 3 miles on the flat at a quicker pace, helping me push towards race pace and keep things honest when the legs are getting tired.

Hard to believe there are now only 4 weeks to go, and — strangely — things seem to be going pretty well. Long may that continue… 🤞

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 6 🏃‍♂️

Pleased to report that it's been another solid week of training. This week included 4 runs totalling 26 miles, keeping things nice and consistent.

The standout was Saturday’s 12-miler, with the final 3 miles finished at Huddersfield parkrun. It was a great way to push myself through the last part of the run — and being around others definitely helped lift the pace. I came in just over 22 minutes, which felt strong considering the miles already in the legs.

I always enjoy parkrun when I can make it, and Huddersfield’s is such a well-organised and friendly event — makes the miles that bit more enjoyable.

With the half marathon now only 5 weeks away, I’m feeling like the fitness is continuing to build nicely. Steady progress, consistent miles, and still enjoying the process.

Onwards to Week 7.

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 5 🏋️‍♂️

Week 5 done ✅ and another solid week in the bag!

This week included 4 runs totaling 26 miles — a small mileage increase on last week. The highlight was a 10-miler on Sunday, where I mixed in a few quicker, race-pace miles to keep things interesting (and tough!).

Saturday’s run saw me take cover from the rain and hit the treadmill for a 3-mile blast. I’ll be honest — I find treadmill running incredibly boring 😅, but it definitely has its place. It’s great for getting in some structured efforts or intervals without battling the hills that Huddersfield likes to throw at me!

All in all, training’s ticking along well — steady progress, a bit more strength in the legs, and the countdown to Málaga continues.

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Weeks 3 & 4 🌍✈️

The past couple of weeks have been a real mix — from the buzz of New York City to the more familiar running routes back home!

Week 3 saw me take my training stateside, managing 3 runs while on holiday in New York. Running really is the best way to explore a new city — from cruising along the Hudson River, taking on 5th Avenue (too many crossings for my liking!), and joining the Brooklyn Bridge parkrun with amazing views of the Manhattan skyline. Definitely one to remember! 🇺🇸

Then came Week 4, back on home soil and back into routine — sort of. Jet lag and a post-trip head cold made things interesting, but I still managed 4 runs totaling 22 miles, including a lovely 10-miler with some trails thrown in. The legs might have been tired, but the progress is steady and the motivation’s still strong.

All in all, training’s ticking along nicely — slow improvements, plenty of fresh air, and the Málaga Half Marathon is now well and truly on the horizon! 🌤️

🏃‍♂️ Half Marathon Training Update – Week 1 🌧️

Week 1 is done and dusted — and what a start it’s been!

I managed to squeeze in 3 runs, totaling 20 miles, around a pretty hectic schedule of work, my son’s football training, and visits to a relative in hospital. Safe to say, finding the time was a workout in itself!

One of those runs was during Storm Amy, which definitely added a “character-building” element to the session. There’s something oddly enjoyable about running headfirst into driving rain and wind — at least, that’s what I kept telling myself at the time! 😅

It’s been a solid start, and I’m already feeling that familiar mix of tired legs and quiet satisfaction. Onward to Week 2 — hopefully with slightly less sideways rain!
