📱 Screen Time & Your Health – What You Need to Know

Recent UK government guidance highlights the importance of managing screen time for both children and adults. While screens are a big part of daily life, too much time on devices can impact sleep, mental wellbeing, and physical health.

👨‍👩‍👧 For children and young people:
• Encourage regular breaks from screens
• Avoid screens at least 1 hour before bedtime
• Balance screen use with physical activity and social time

🧑‍💻 For adults:
• Take short breaks every 30–60 minutes
• Reduce screen use before sleep to improve rest
• Be mindful of posture and eye strain

💡 Top tip: Try the “20-20-20 rule” – every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

❗️MENINGITIS❗️

As you may be aware, there has been a recent outbreak of Meningitis B in Kent and we understand that this may be causing concern. Public health teams are managing the situation.

❌At this time, there has been no change to national guidance for GP practices: we are not able to offer meningitis B vaccinations on demand.

If you are calling for general advice about meningitis or vaccines, please visit nhs.uk for the most up‑to‑date guidance (Meningitis - NHS).

📞Patients can call 0344 225 3861 Monday to Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm if they have no symptoms but are concerned that they have been in contact with a confirmed case or have a general enquiry.

Symptoms to look out for:

Meningococcal disease can progress very quickly. Seek urgent medical help if you notice:

🔴A rash that does not fade under pressure
🤒Sudden high fever
🤕Severe headache
🥴Stiff neck
🤮Vomiting or diarrhoea
🥶Cold hands/feet
💡Sensitivity to light
🫩Confusion, extreme sleepiness, or seizures

These symptoms have been highlighted by UKHSA as key warning signs requiring immediate action. If you, or someone you are with, has symptoms of serious illness, please seek urgent medical attention.

Thank you for your understanding.

🩺 Important message from your GP surgery

We want to reassure our patients following recent cases of MenB in Kent. While these situations are rare, they are a reminder of how serious meningococcal disease can be, particularly for babies and young children.

💉The MenB (meningococcal B) vaccine has been routinely available on the NHS since September 2015, offering vital protection against a strain of bacteria that can cause meningitis and sepsis.

📕We strongly encourage parents and carers to check their child’s vaccination status and ensure they are up to date. The vaccine is offered as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule, starting at 8 weeks of age up to 2 years old.

If you have any questions or would like to book an appointment, please contact the surgery — our team is here to help.

**PLEASE NOTE** this vaccine is not currently available to patients over the age of 2 years old.
