Diabetes Week 2026: 8th – 14th June -let's change how we talk about diabetes.

8 out of 10 people living with diabetes say they’ve faced negative attitudes because of their diabetes; people passing judgement, making sweeping statements, or blaming and shaming people living with diabetes.

This is diabetes stigma. And it causes real harm to millions. That’s why the focus this year is to ‘Strike Out Stigma’. To show people that nobody chooses diabetes. That it isn’t anyone’s fault. And that by changing the way we talk about diabetes, together we can create a world where diabetes does no harm.

What is diabetes❓️

Diabetes is a serious condition where your blood glucose level is too high. It can happen when your body doesn't produce enough insulin or the insulin it produces isn't effective.

◇ Type 1 diabetes, you can’t make any insulin at all.

◇ Type 2 diabetes, which is the most common, it’s a bit different. The insulin you make either can’t work effectively, or you can’t produce enough of it.

These are the main two but there are others: gestational diabetes, which some women may go on to develop during pregnancy, type 3c, MODY and Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults

Carers Week 2026 -Monday 8 to Sunday 14 June.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

Who is a carer?

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support.

Feeling the strain of your caring duties make sure you get the help and support you need, contact the surgery and we can signpost you to services that could help your situation.

18th – 24th May is Dementia Action Week the aim is to raise awareness of Dementia

Dementia is a group of symptoms. It’s caused by different diseases that damage the brain. The symptoms get worse over time and include:

●memory loss
●confusion and needing help with daily tasks
●problems with language and understanding
●changes in behaviour.

Dementia is progressive, which means symptoms may be relatively mild at first, but they get worse over time.

There are many different types of Dementia but there are 4 main types these are:

1.Alzheimer’s disease - is the most common type of dementia. For most people, the first signs of Alzheimer’s are problems with their memory, thinking, language or perception.
2.Vascular dementia - is the second most common type of dementia. Common early signs of vascular dementia include problems with planning or organising, making decisions or solving problems.
3.Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) - is caused by Lewy body disease. Symptoms of DLB include having difficulties staying focused, experiencing delusions, and problems with movement and sleep.
4.Frontotemporal dementia (FTD)- is one of the less common types of dementia. It is sometimes called Pick's disease or frontal lobe dementia. Common symptoms of FTD include changes to personality and behaviour and/or difficulties with language.

🌞11th – 17th May is Sun Awareness Week 🌞

Sun Awareness week is the kick-off to our summer-long Sun Awareness campaign. This week is used to re-enforce the need for sun protection across the UK.

Sun exposure is a major cause of skin cancer, the most common type of cancer in the UK.

Sun safety doesn’t have to mean total sun avoidance. Following these simple steps to keep safe in the sun at home or abroad. These will keep you safe from sunburn and reduce your risk of skin cancer in the future.

🌞Make use of the shade- especially during the hours 11am-3pm

🌞Wearing clothes that protect you from the sun – hats or sunglass, clothing thats loose

🌞Wear suncream – apply SPF30 + suncream and reapply every 2 hours and when picking which suncream always look out for the UVA protection logo.

🌞Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week - The 2026 theme is "Action", focusing on moving beyond awareness to taking practical, daily steps to support mental health. Action: for yourself, for someone else, for all of us.

Here are Eight actions to improve mental health in the long term:

1. PRIORITISE YOUR HEALTH Being physically active, sticking to a healthy, balanced diet, and getting enough sleep.

2. CONNECT WITH OTHERS Regularly spending time with friends, family and loved ones is great for preventative mental health care. Staying socially connected can help you feel less lonely.

3. BE PRESENT Paying attention to the present moment, sometimes known as ‘being mindful’, can boost your wellbeing and help you see things from new perspectives

4. LEARN A NEW SKILL If you’re looking for ways to boost your self-esteem, build a sense of purpose, and connect with others, learning a new skill can help. You could try cooking a new recipe, working on a DIY project, or picking up a hobby that challenges you, like learning to paint.

5. LEARN TO UNDERSTAND AND MANAGE YOUR EMOTIONS Feeling very upset makes it difficult to think clearly, make healthy decisions or relate to others. Paying attention to our feelings and reflecting on what caused them, without judgement, can help us understand and manage them better.

6. SET BOUNDARIES: Setting boundaries doesn’t always feel easy or comfortable at first, but it can help reduce stress, prevent burnout, build self-esteem, and improve relationships overall. Think about what your personal limits and values are and let these guide you when setting new boundaries.

7.PRIORITISE SLEEP Good quality sleep is fundamental to emotional and cognitive wellbeing. Disrupted or insufficient sleep can increase our vulnerability to stress, anxiety and depression.

8. SEEK PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT If life feels overwhelming, asking for professional support may help.
