Thought I’d share a few foodie photos from my recent holiday to Italy and Greece 🌞🍋😊🍜

One of the highlights was visiting a local olive mill, where I tasted freshly produced extra virgin olive oil wow! Olive oil drizzled into greek yogurt with honey was particularly nice 😋

Olive oil is a key feature of the traditional Mediterranean diet.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

The Mediterranean Diet (MD) is widely recognised as a heart healthy eating pattern. It emphasises:

🫘 Plant based foods: plenty of fruit, vegetables, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds
🍞 Wholegrains: fibre rich options such as wholemeal pasta, brown rice, oats and wholegrain bread
🫒Healthy fats: mainly unsaturated fats, especially extra virgin olive oil
🐟 Lean proteins: fish (particularly oily fish like salmon and sardines), with moderate amounts of poultry and eggs
🧀 Dairy in moderation: typically lower fat cheeses and plain yogurt

What are the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet?

One of the most well known studies examining the MD is the PREDIMED trial, which followed around 7,447 adults aged 50–80 in Spain who were at high cardiovascular risk. Participants were monitored for an average of 4.8 years and randomly assigned to one of three groups:
➡️Mediterranean diet + extra virgin olive oil
➡️Mediterranean diet + mixed nuts
➡️Low fat diet (control group)

The study found that the risk of heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular death was reduced by around 30% in both Mediterranean diet groups, compared with the low fat control group.

Here’s the link to the study if you wish to read more

Beyond heart health, the Mediterranean Diet has also been associated with benefits for Type 2 diabetes, reduced inflammation, and lower risk of certain cancers. It works best when combined with other lifestyle factors such as regular physical activity, weight management, limiting alcohol and avoiding smoking.

Thought I'd make my own granola today, which is high in fibre, high in protein & healthy fats.

Started with jumbo oats & added a few spoonfuls of: chia & linseeds, almonds & pecans, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, dessicated coconut & dried cranberries.

I then added some peanut butter & honey and mixed it all together. In the oven to bake for 25 mins (160 oC) and done! Finally once cooled, added a bit of dark chocolate 😋 👍

Just lately on social media I am seeing more people post about seed oils & advice to avoid and being bad for your health. What does the evidence say? 🤔.
Here is a great article by Dietitian at British Heart Foundation to set the record straight 👍

We investigate claims that seed oils like sunflower, rapeseed and soyabean high in omega-6 fatty acids increase inflammation and the risk of cardiovascular disease. Discover BHF’s verdict.
