A warm welcome to all of our new doctors! 🤗

We’re so excited to have you joining us.

I know exactly how you’re feeling because I was there myself back in 2013. I can still remember my very first day in the Emergency Department, in our old department. I felt like a rabbit caught in the headlights - heart racing, a bit terrified, and wondering what I’d got myself into! But within the first hour I was stuck in, and I absolutely loved it.

Fast forward 13 years, and I genuinely feel proud and grateful to be here as one of your Emergency Medicine Consultants and Educational Lead. It’s a real privilege to help support you through your own journey. ☺️

Some days will be brilliant. Other days will be tough. That’s Emergency Medicine. But I promise you’ll learn more than you ever imagined, and you’ll always have people around you who want to help you succeed. Please ask questions, get involved, and make the most of every opportunity. 💭

As we mentioned during induction, there are lots of teaching sessions available throughout your rotation, so make sure you come along. I’ve also put together a few blogs and my Top Tips posters, which you might find useful when you’re getting started.

Please don’t ever feel you can’t come and ask me something, no matter how big or small. And if you see me in the corridor - or flying past on the shop floor - come and say hello! I’d love to speak to you all throughout your rotation.😃

I hope you enjoy your time with us, make some great memories, and get as much out of your experience as possible. I look forward to meeting you all soon!

HEAT EXHAUSTION ☀️🥵

With high temperatures, it’s important to remain vigilant of heat exhaustion in the emergency department.

Patients may present with mild neurological symptoms and raised temperature. Prompt recognition, cooling and rehydration efforts are important to prevent deterioration to heat stroke! 🚨

🚑🧑‍⚕️ SIM WARS 🧑‍⚕️🚨

Last week, our FY2 doctors went head-to-head in Sim Wars! 💥

Working in three teams, they each designed and delivered a realistic emergency department scenario, challenging one another to manage high-pressure clinical situations. After some fantastic performances, one team was crowned the winner and took home the trophy! 🏆

Each simulation provided an excellent learning opportunity, highlighting not only clinical decision-making but also the impact that human factors and the clinical environment can have on patient care. Recognising these influences helps us work more safely and effectively as a team.

A huge well done to everyone involved for creating engaging, educational scenarios and embracing the opportunity to learn together! 👏

EM3Learn 🤝 .official

Yesterday, EM3Learn attended the ASME Annual General Meeting at Eastside Rooms, Birmingham.

Dr Patrick Kilgannon and Dr Krishna Savadia presented work that they have been involved in - including the relaunch of our social media pages, and establishing a peer-to-peer FY2 teaching programme in the Emergency Department. 🚨 🚑

It was a fantastic day, with lots of learning and networking! Special thanks to EM3Learn lead, Dr Sunny Jutla, for her continued support. 🙌

This month, we had a new arrival to the team…

Please welcome our new paediatric training mannequin (AKA Baby James), pictured with Paediatric ED Education Fellow, Dr James Bubb. 👶

This is a big win for the education team and the investment reflects the fantastic work and progress we have made! 🥳

NAI LIGHTNING LEARNING ⚡️🧠

Non-accidental injury (NAI) is an important consideration in paediatric patients presenting with inconsistent explanations for injury. 🤕

It is the responsibility of all NHS staff to safeguard children - if you suspect NAI, escalate your concerns to the most senior staff member in your area. 🚨
