What's the difference between coaching and mentoring?

While both can play a powerful role in developing the next generation of OSH leaders, they each offer something different. IOSH Immediate Past President Kelly Nicoll, Specialist Steve Conway and members of the Future Leaders Community recently explored the difference between coaching and mentoring, and how both can support you to become a trusted advisor and influential voice in your organisation.

Mentoring is about sharing experience, lessons learned and practical insights gained from walking the path before. It's an opportunity to learn from someone else's successes, challenges and perspectives.

Coaching, on the other hand, is less about providing answers and more about asking the right questions. It encourages people to think differently, explore their options and find solutions that work for their own situation.

Whether you're looking to build confidence, strengthen your leadership skills or become a more influential voice in your organisation, both coaching and mentoring can help unlock your potential.

đź’¬ Which approach has had the biggest impact on your professional development: coaching, mentoring, or a combination of both?

Who looks after the people who spend their careers looking after everyone else?

For many health and safety professionals, managing risk is part of the day job. But psychosocial risks can affect anyone, including those working to protect others.

In her blog, Laura Wilding, OSH Content Developer at IOSH, explores how health and safety professionals often navigate challenging conversations, conflicting demands and high-pressure situations. Over time, these experiences can take a toll on wellbeing and long-term health.

Taking an evidence-based, collaborative approach to identifying and controlling psychosocial hazards can help create healthier, safer workplaces while supporting the wellbeing of those leading the conversation too.

This week marks European Week for Safety and Health at Work, and this year's theme, "Together for mental health at work: preventing psychosocial risks at work", is a timely reminder that psychosocial risk management matters for everyone.

This World Mental Health Day, let's listen to lived experience.

Our member David Donnelly CMIOSH knows how life-changing a workplace incident can be, both physically and mentally.

After a serious workplace accident at the age of 20, David spent years coming to terms with the psychological impact of trauma.

Since then, David has transformed his experience into a force for good. Retraining in occupational safety and health, he built a career dedicated to helping others understand the real-life consequences of unmanaged workplace risks and the importance of prevention.

David believes lived experience can be one of the most powerful tools for improving workplace culture and safety.

Trauma‑informed practice is changing the way we lead in safety, and it starts with understanding people.

At the Health and Safety Event, Bill Fox, Rod Farnworth and Hannah Clarke showed OSH professionals what really happens when trauma, shame and violence shape everyday workplace interactions. Their session was a powerful reminder that safety isn’t just about rules, it’s about relationships.

➡️ A pause.
➡️ A moment of listening.
➡️ A shift in tone.
➡️ A bit of empathy.

Small actions like these can stop situations from escalating and help create workplaces where people feel seen, supported and safe.

If you’re passionate about building human‑centred safety cultures, this is the kind of conversation that moves the profession forward.

Learning from real-life scenarios can help prevent future tragedies, especially in high-risk industries like agriculture.

Recently, the IOSH East Anglia Community and Norwich and District Safety Group joined Birketts LLP in Norwich for an immersive mock trial exploring a tragic farm fatality.

Delegates saw how the pressures on a farming business created tensions and errors that led to a fatal incident. The mock trial considered the importance of previous near misses and physical barriers while learning how the incident could be perceived by a jury and law.

Reflecting on the event, Carly Hughes, Vice-Chair of the IOSH East Anglia Community, said: "The audience were genuinely captivated as we learned about the courtroom, legal perspectives, and considered what caused a fatal incident in agriculture. It was also an opportunity to share time with other safety professionals whether agricultural or in other sectors. A thought-provoking event where we all learned."

Events like this bring professionals together to share knowledge, learn from others and help drive safer and healthier workplaces.
