Recovery isn’t only for athletes. πŸ’™

We often think about recovery as something that happens after a hard workout, race or training session.

But everyday life puts demands on your body too.

Long hours at a desk, repetitive movements, poor sleep, stress, walking, exercise and busy routines can all contribute to stiffness, tension and fatigue.

Recovery doesn't have to be complicated. Small habits such as moving regularly, prioritising sleep and making time for gentle mobility can all help you look after your body.

Your body doesn't always need to be in pain before it needs some attention.

Did you know the muscle that feels tight isn't always the source of the problem?

Recurring tightness can sometimes be linked to changes in activity, reduced strength, previous injuries, recovery habits or the way your body is managing its workload.

That's why simply treating the area that feels uncomfortable isn't always enough. A thorough assessment looks at the bigger picture to help identify what's contributing to the issue, so treatment can focus on more than just temporary relief.

If the same area keeps becoming tight, it may be time to ask why rather than simply treating it again. If recurring tightness is holding you back, we'd be happy to help assess what's really going on.

Strong movement isn't about one perfect exercise. It's about building the right movement patterns.

Three great places to start are:
βœ” Split Squats
βœ” Single-Leg Hinges
βœ” Calf Raises

These exercises develop strength, balance and control that transfer into many sports and everyday activities.

Remember, the best exercise is the one that's appropriate for your current ability.
If pain or recurring injuries are limiting your training, individual guidance is always the better option.

The first session back isn't about proving your fitness.

After time away, it's tempting to jump straight back into your usual weights, pace or training volume.

Instead, give your body the chance to adapt again.

A smarter first session might include:
β€’ A progressive warm-up
β€’ Familiar exercises
β€’ Fewer working sets
β€’ A manageable effort
β€’ Seeing how your body responds before increasing the load

Training isn't won in a single session. It's built through consistency.

Start smart so you're ready for the next workout too.

Stretching has plenty of benefits, but preventing DOMS isn't one of them.

Stretching can improve flexibility, increase your range of movement and simply feel good after exercise.

However, current evidence suggests it doesn't meaningfully reduce delayed onset muscle soreness.

Sports massage may help reduce how sore or fatigued you feel after training, but it should be seen as part of your recovery plan rather than a way to boost performance overnight.

The key is understanding what each recovery tool is designed to do.
Recovery works best when it's based on facts, not fitness myths.

Waiting until something hurts isn't always the best approach.

Many clients use massage and soft tissue therapy proactively to:
βœ” Maintain mobility
βœ” Reduce muscular tension
βœ” Support training
βœ” Improve recovery
βœ” Help prevent small issues becoming bigger ones

Looking after your body before problems arise can help keep you moving at your best.

Muscle soreness after exercise is completely normal.

Especially if you've tried something new or increased your training.

However, not every pain should be dismissed as "just DOMS."

If you're experiencing severe pain, swelling, difficulty putting weight on a limb, or symptoms that continue getting worse instead of better, it's worth seeking professional advice.

Knowing the difference can help you recover properly and avoid making things worse.

β˜€οΈ Summer Recovery & Heat

The best recovery routines are often the simplest.

Remember the basics:
πŸ’§ Stay hydrated
😴 Prioritise sleep
🀸 Keep moving
πŸ₯— Fuel your body properly
πŸ’† Support recovery with treatment when needed

Consistency beats complexity every time.

Have you ever come back from a walking holiday feeling more sore than expected?

It often isn't the walk itself that's the problem. It's how much your activity suddenly changes.

Longer distances, steeper hills, carrying a backpack and walking on uneven ground all increase the demands on your body.

Preparing with simple strength exercises in the weeks before your trip can help your body manage those demands more comfortably.

Think about building your capacity before your holiday, rather than trying to recover afterwards.

Save this post if you've got a walking holiday coming up.
