Nervousness is a completely normal part of beginning therapy, especially for children.
To help ease the process and build comfort before your initial visit, I've created a video showing you exactly what to expect during the first session at Adaptive Steps Counselling.
Knowing the environment and the routine in advance can make taking that first step much easier.
Take a watch, and let me know how I can support your family's journey!

Hello, I'm Tamsin Ferrara-Mather, and I am committed to creating a safe, supportive, and empowering space for young people to explore their feelings and navigate life's challenges.
The focus of our work together is always on your child. I believe that every young person holds the key to their own growth, and my role is to walk alongside them, offering the right tools and support tailored specifically to their needs.
What I Offer: A Child-Led, Tailored Approach
I provide specialist counselling for children and young people aged 5 to 19.
My approach is child-led and pluralistic, meaning I draw from a variety of effective methods to ensure the therapy fits the client, not the other way around. This adaptable style helps us connect with your child in the way that feels most natural and helpful to them.
I frequently use creative and engaging techniques, including:
* 🎨 Art Therapy: Using creative expression when words are too difficult.
* 🧸 Play Therapy: A natural language for younger children to process emotions.
* πŸ—£οΈ Talking Therapy: Offering a confidential space for older children and teens to communicate their experiences.
My Experience & Professional Commitment
You can feel confident knowing that your child is in experienced and well-supported hands:
* Placement Experience: I have over a year's valuable experience as a placement counsellor at Place2Be, working directly within a school environment to support children's mental well-being.
* Extensive Background: I have 10 years of experience working with children, including 5 years specifically supporting children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This background provides me with a deep understanding of diverse learning and emotional needs.
* Safety Assurance: I hold a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate.
* Professional Qualifications: I hold a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and am currently completing a Level 5 qualification in Counselling and Psychotherapy, which I will finish in March 2026.
* Accredited Membership: I am a current member of the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS), adhering to their ethical framework for safe and professional practice.
My promise is to provide a non-judgmental and effective space where your child can feel truly heard and understood.
