When can I have Manual Lymphatic Drainage after surgery?

It’s a question we’re often asked, and the answer is: it depends on you and your surgery.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can form part of post operative care, helping to support lymphatic flow and manage swelling during recovery.

When it is appropriate to begin treatment will depend on factors including:

• The type of surgery you have had
• How you are healing
• Your general health
• Any post operative complications
• Advice from your surgeon or medical team

That’s why we don’t take a one size fits all approach.

Before treatment, we will make sure MLD is appropriate for you and tailor your treatment to your stage of recovery.

What exactly is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

One of the biggest misconceptions about MLD is that it’s similar to a traditional massage.

It isn’t.

Your lymphatic system helps move excess fluid from your tissues. Unlike your circulatory system, it doesn’t have a heart to pump fluid around the body.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses very light, slow and rhythmic movements designed to support the natural movement of lymphatic fluid.

And because MLD works differently from traditional massage, firmer doesn’t mean better.

MLD may be helpful for people experiencing:

• Fluid retention or puffiness
• Swollen or tired feeling legs
• Facial puffiness
• Feelings of heaviness or congestion
