Leslie’s life was one of utmost dedication to the industry; first at sea, then in representing local fishermen, and also training the next generation of fishermen through Shetland’s NAFC Marine Centre.

Regarded as one of the most talented fishermen of his generation, with more than three decades of fishing experience, Leslie became a long-serving chair of the Shetland Fishermen’s Association and also held office within the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, the Shetland Fish Producers’ Organisation, the Shetland Fishermen’s Trust and the Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation.

He remained Honorary President of the Shetland Fishermen’s Association following his retirement, as testament to his immense contribution, which continued unabated as a steady source of wisdom and words of encouragement in recent years.

Whilst representing Shetland fishermen in the corridors of power – be it in complicated industry summits, or difficult end of year quota negotiations – Leslie was famous for his skill in deploying his hard-earned ‘midder wit’ with diplomatic deftness, to cut through the noise and gently force common sense back on to the agenda at every turn.

His abilities and achievements were outshone only by his humility. Leslie characteristically considered his MBE – awarded to him in 2016 for services to the fishing industry – not as something for himself, but as an honour for all Shetland fishermen, past and present, who had helped to sustain our community.

The very many young fishermen who he personally helped to train through the NAFC Marine Centre (now UHI Shetland) will be part of his lasting legacy.

Everyone involved with Shetland Fishermen’s Association, the Shetland Fish Producers’ Organisation, and the Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation would like to extend their sincere sympathy to Leslie’s family and to all those who knew him and worked alongside him.

The Fishermen's Mission's annual fundraising challenge, The Big Dip, returns from 5 to 11 October.

Following the success of last year's launch, they're aiming to raise £10,000 to help fishermen and their families across the UK.

Participants are invited to take a dip in the sea, a river, loch, lake or even a paddling pool, while raising funds for the people who bring seafood to our tables.

The Fishermen's Mission provides practical, emotional and financial support to active and former fishermen and their families when facing hardship, illness, injury or bereavement.

Whether you're interested in:

“Shetland has a lot to lose if we don’t manage to secure a new order”.

A series of five public meetings are being held this month to discuss the future management plans. 🦀 🦞 🐚 👇🏻

Shetland Shellfish Management Organisation (SSMO) is looking to renew local control of inshore shellfish fisheries for another 15 years.

Only the 105 boats licensed by the SSMO are legally allowed to catch and land shellfish commercially from within six nautical miles of Shetland.

The SSMO said the system prevents overfishing by unauthorised local and nomadic fishing boats which could cause the stocks to collapse.
