11-year-old Frankie has raised a remarkable £5,125 (and counting!) for our Hospice after completing Kerry's Annual Charity Bike Ride at the weekend 🌟

Frankie’s Nannie, Ann, is currently receiving care on our Inpatient Unit for symptom control and pain management relating to a stage four cancer diagnosis. The specialist care she has received at the Hospice meant she was well enough to leave for a few hours to cheer them on, making for an inspiring day.

His youngest sister, Rosie, 6, also finished in a tag-along to dad Peter’s bike and middle sister, Darcie, 9, managed to complete 20 miles on her own.

Their mum, Hannah, was bursting with pride: ā€œFrankie loved doing the bike ride this year alongside his sisters and dad and fundraising for such an amazing charity. We only set a target of Ā£500 initially and can’t believe it’s now over Ā£5,000! I’m super proud of them all. It was a wonderful day and an honour to support Garden House Hospice Care and thank them for the care they are giving mum.ā€

Ahead of the event, we transformed our on-site gym into a space for the family to create banners - a small gesture, but one which meant a lot. Frankie told us: ā€œWhenever I come to Garden House to see my Nannie, it feels like a family. Everyone is so kind to her and to us, and it’s a really heartwarming place. I took part in the bike ride to say thank you for looking after her so well.ā€

A heartfelt thank you and congratulations to Frankie, Darcie, Rosie and Peter for raising such a fantastic amount of money! Frankie’s fundraising page is still accepting donations at: https://www.justgiving.com/page/frankie-t-b 🚓

Stuart was referred to Garden House Hospice Care in May 2026 after undergoing open heart surgery. A diagnosis of severe aortic stenosis - a heart valve condition where the main valve opening narrows significantly and blocks proper blood flow from the heart - had left him at risk of heart failure.

Following his surgery, Stuart and his wife, Jill, struggled to adjust to their challenging new circumstances. After navigating a tricky couple of months, Stuart was referred to our Rehab and Wellbeing team. That first phone call changed everything, and the couple haven't looked back.

Now on his road to recovery, Stuart and Jill have nothing but praise for the support they have received. From attending education sessions to exercise groups, Stuart is noticing the changes within himself and already feels "so much better". Jill has watched her husband go from strength to strength over the last few weeks and describes the Hospice as "the most special place", offering her a sense of comfort knowing that life is getting back to normal.

Our Rehab and Wellbeing team exist to help people like Stuart live well with their diagnosis and continue doing the things in life they enjoy. It will cost us £162,726 this year to provide these services free of charge to our local community and we need to raise £50,000 in charitable income to support with these costs. Please donate today and help make every moment matter.

Last but certainly not least of our permanent Rehab and Wellbeing team is Claire, our Occupational Therapist. Having previously worked in hospital settings, she loves that her role gives her time to really get to know a patient and takes great satisfaction in helping them achieve their goals. Her role includes - more often than you’d think - conversations around being able to safely use the bathroom, and organising equipment people might need installing in their homes to help them with this and other daily tasks.

Claire addresses behavioural changes in people as well as their physical symptoms, helping them recognise what it means to still feel like themselves and not just ā€˜a patient with a condition’. Claire supports with discharge planning from our Inpatient Unit as well as delivering a selection of day services, and loves how varied her job is. She sees her role as niche, but essential to the community.

Hundreds of people accessed our Rehab and Wellbeing services last year. As we embark on our mission to meet more people with advancing illnesses early in their journey, we hope to continue making this impact. But we can only do that with your help.

With only 40% of our funding coming from the Government, it’s only down to the generosity of our community that we can continue providing this specialised care. Our Rehab and Wellbeing service will cost us Ā£162,726 this year and we need to raise Ā£50,000 this summer to support with these costs.

Described by her daughters Kim and Maria as a ā€œgentle personā€ and a ā€œfantastic mum and wifeā€, Anna was first diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2015. She was moved into a care home in 2024 after a rapid decline in her health left her bed bound, and was hospitalised in January of this year. This was where the family first learned of Garden House Hospice Care.

Kim and Maria recall Anna's referral to the Hospice being an emotional and concerning time, but agreed it was the right place for her to be. Here, they share how their worries quickly disappeared after experiencing the ā€œsuperiorā€ level of care their mum received, and how our teams looked after them as family members too.

Hospices like ours exist to to provide patients and their family members with compassionate care and support from the moment they receive news of an advancing illness. Whether it's for days, weeks, months or even years, we are here, because every person matters šŸ’™
