🧠 Monday Brain Stretch

Last week's answer: Bothrops Lanceolatus!

Many of you recognised the symptoms as belonging to the snake family, but this time the correct remedy was one of the lesser-known snake venoms.

This week's Brain Stretch continues our patient-story approach rather than using repertory language.

Today's patient is a little girl, and her mother does the talking:

• "She gets frequent middle ear infections which usually start at night. They're quite painful, and finish up by exuding greenish yellow gunk which doesn't smell."

• "These ear infections can follow on from swimming, or can come on after a cold – she gets quite a lot of those."

• "Her colds are always worse at night because her nose gets really blocked. Lying down definitely makes things worse, so does getting too warm."

• "She loves sweets, ice-cream and cheese, but rich or fatty foods can end up giving her a headache or indigestion."

• "She's generally a sweet and easy-going child, but can get quite emotional and tearful at times, especially if she doesn't get her own way. A reassuring cuddle generally helps to calm things down."

It's the end of July, which means it's time for our Remedy of the Month.

As many of us head off on our summer holidays, this month's remedy couldn't be more timely.

Cocculus is a well-known homeopathic remedy traditionally considered for motion sickness, travel sickness, dizziness, vertigo, and the effects of exhaustion or sleep deprivation. It is often associated with people who feel weak, nauseous, or unwell after travelling, long journeys, lack of rest, or prolonged mental and physical strain.

It is commonly considered for travel-related nausea, car sickness, sea sickness, air travel discomfort, a sensation of emptiness in the stomach, fatigue, trembling, and difficulty concentrating. It may also be appropriate where symptoms develop following loss of sleep, such as caring for others or periods of prolonged wakefulness.

Key characteristics include marked dizziness on sitting up or moving, nausea made worse by travel, and a general sense of weakness or faintness. The individual may feel mentally sluggish, easily overwhelmed, and lacking in confidence when faced with everyday demands.

As with all homeopathic prescribing, remedies are selected according to the individual's unique symptom picture.

✈️ Are you travelling this summer? Have you ever experienced motion sickness or travel fatigue? We'd love to hear about your experiences in the comments.

🧠 Monday Brain Stretch

Last week's answer: Staphysagria!

This week's Brain Stretch is a little different. Instead of repertory-style keynotes, we've written it as if a patient is telling their story. We'd love to hear which style you prefer! For today we have:

• It all started with a sudden, painless loss of sight in my right eye that lasted only a few minutes, like a dark curtain passing across my vision.
• A couple of months later, I developed a painful red rash on my right thigh and was treated with a strong course of antibiotics.
• Several months later, my face became red and blotchy, my glands swelled, my skin looked unhealthy with patches flaking away, and I had no energy.
• When my tongue suddenly wouldn't work properly and I struggled to speak, I genuinely thought I was having a stroke.
• I'm generally quite a confident, self-sufficient person, but after being passed from one specialist to another with no-one seeming to know what's wrong, and taking so many medications that are playing havoc with my stomach, I'm starting to feel totally lost and abandoned.
