Fundamentally this has been a question of education, or to be more precise, a lack of education. Elsewhere I have read most Americans lack much world geography awareness and that reduces their need to embrace other cartographies; and the only nation to oppose the UN resolution.
Recognising the purpose of the map should be sufficient context for wanting a different map view. Back as far as the ealry 1970s I was supporting the use of Peter's projection for map posters in schools - Peters projection is designed to show accurate area, whereas Mercator is designed for distance - specifically for navigation.
