Sometimes we can forget the incredible impact of the counselling space. Yesterday I had a final session with a young client who shared this lovely card with me about their experience of counselling.

We used our final session together to create a transitional object to remind them of their key take aways from their counselling sessions. Such a privilege to do this work ❤️

💚 September is su***de awareness month 💚

Sometimes the people who are struggling the most are the ones who have become very good at looking like they’re okay.

Suicidal thoughts don’t always look like crisis.
They can look like exhaustion.
Withdrawal.
Feeling like a burden.
Losing hope.
Or simply feeling unable to carry everything anymore.

This month is about opening up conversations that can feel frightening or uncomfortable.

It’s about asking “Are you okay?” — and being willing to hear the real answer.

It’s about reminding people that they don’t have to reach breaking point before they deserve support.

And it’s about helping to remove the shame that can surround suicidal thoughts.

You don’t need to have the perfect words.
You don’t need to fix everything.

Sometimes being there, listening without judgement and reminding someone that they matter can be incredibly powerful.

💛 Talk about su***de. Ask the question. Listen to the answer. Stay connected.

If you’re struggling, please reach out to someone you trust or seek professional support. You deserve to be heard.

I’m back at work after a lovely week off. I was fortunate enough to enjoy a trip to the beach where I recorded this beautiful video and it really got me thinking…

Sometimes life can feel like this…

The sand blowing across the surface creates the illusion that everything is moving.

Messy. Complicated. Ever-changing. Just as we find our footing, something else shifts — another challenge to navigate, another feeling to make sense of.

For a moment, it’s hard to tell what’s solid and what isn’t.

Our thoughts and feelings can do the same.

When there’s a lot going on inside us, everything can feel uncertain and overwhelming. Our emotions can convince us that the whole landscape of our life has changed.

But beneath all that movement, there is still something constant — us.

Our core remains. The part of us that exists beneath the noise, the thoughts, the feelings and everything life throws our way.

The surface may shift and change, but underneath it all, we are still there.

Perhaps we don’t always need to calm the chaos.

Sometimes we just need to remember who we are beneath it. 🤍

Sometimes, finding the words is the hardest part. 🌿

In therapy, we don’t always have to rely on talking.

I sometimes use objects such as crystals, shells, stones or other natural materials to help clients explore their experiences in a different way.

In this activity, different crystals were used to represent different stages of a person’s life — choosing an object for each chapter and noticing what it represented, what feelings came up, and how those experiences connected together.

There’s no “right” meaning behind the object. What matters is what it means to the person choosing it.

Having something physical to hold, move or place can make thoughts and feelings that seem difficult to explain feel a little more tangible.

Sometimes a stone can represent a difficult time.
A shell might represent safety.
A crystal might represent someone important, a turning point, strength, loss, growth or hope.

And sometimes, once we’ve placed our story in front of us, the words begin to come. 💚

Therapy doesn’t always have to look like two people sitting in chairs talking.

Sometimes we need another way to tell our story.

📱 Wellbeing apps I use as a therapist

Looking after our mental wellbeing doesn’t always need to involve big changes. Sometimes a few minutes to breathe, meditate, tap or simply check in with how we’re feeling can make a difference. 🌿

These are some of the apps I personally use and recommend — simple, accessible tools that can support your wellbeing in everyday life.

They’re not a replacement for therapy, but they can be a really useful addition to your wellbeing toolbox. ❤️

Small tools, big impact.

Which wellbeing apps do you love?

Do you ever find yourself holding your breath? Or shallow breathing (breathing from your chest when you’re feeling anxious? 🫨

Your breathing is like a remote control for your nervous system. When your breathing is fast and shallow, your body receives the message, ‘Something isn’t safe.’ !When your breathing becomes slow, gentle and deep, it receives the message, ‘I’m safe enough to slow down.’ We can’t always think our way out of stress, but we can often breathe our way into a calmer state. 🧘‍♀️

The simple breathing exercises below can help send the signal to your nervous system that you are safe. Try them in the moment, when you are feeling stressed or anxious. Or begin a daily breathwork practice and notice how you feel. ✨
