🩺 Don’t Miss Your Baby’s Hip Scan Appointment 🩺

Did you know that some babies are offered a follow-up hip ultrasound scan as part of the NHS Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) screening programme?

These scans help identify Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) – a condition where a baby’s hip joint has not developed normally. Some babies are offered a hip scan because of risk factors such as being in a breech position during pregnancy or having a family history of hip problems.

✅ Why is attending the appointment so important?
Early detection means treatment can often be simple and highly effective.
Prompt diagnosis can help prevent long-term problems with walking, mobility and hip pain.

Delayed diagnosis may result in more complex treatment being needed later in childhood.

NHS guidance recommends that babies who need a hip ultrasound receive it within the recommended timeframe, usually when they are 4–6 weeks old, depending on their individual circumstances. Parents are encouraged to attend all appointments offered as part of the screening pathway.

👶 If your baby has been referred for a hip scan:
✔️ Please attend the appointment.
✔️ Contact the hospital as soon as possible if you need to rearrange.
✔️ Ask questions if you are unsure about why the scan has been offered.

A simple appointment today could make a big difference to your child’s future health and development.

Triple celebrations on Lincoln Labour Ward in the last week for some of our fantastic student midwives.

Merit and Eden from University of Lincoln, and Chloe from De Montford University have all successfully facilitated their 40th births! This means they have achieved the required number of facilitated births they need to qualify as midwives!

Last week we let you know about some of the research studies that ULTH are engaging in. Here is some more information about one of those. The ADAPT study. We are looking for women to participate in the study - can you help?
