πŸ“’ ISPC Update: New Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

The International Society of Psychotherapy and Counselling (ISPC) has introduced a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy to support the safe, ethical and responsible use of AI within psychotherapy and counselling practice.

AI is developing rapidly and can offer valuable benefits to practitioners, including administrative support, education, research and reflective practice. However, its use also raises important professional considerations around:

πŸ”Ή Client confidentiality and privacy
πŸ”Ή Data protection and informed consent
πŸ”Ή Accuracy and reliability
πŸ”Ή Bias and discrimination
πŸ”Ή Professional accountability
πŸ”Ή Clinical judgement and client safety

Our new policy provides clear guidance to help ISPC members understand where AI may appropriately support professional practice β€” and where appropriate safeguards and professional judgement must remain central.

AI should support the work of the practitioner, not replace the therapeutic relationship, professional responsibility or human judgement.

We encourage all ISPC members to familiarise themselves with the new policy and consider how emerging AI technologies may affect their professional practice.

Setting Your Fees: Finding the Right Balance

Determining your counselling fees is one of the trickiest parts of starting private practice.

Here's how to approach it:

πŸ“Š Factors to Consider:

Your qualifications and experience level
Local market rates in your area
Your overhead costs (rent, insurance, supervision, etc.)
The population you want to serve
Your financial needs and goals

πŸ’‘ Pricing Strategies:

Research what other counsellors in your area charge
Consider offering a sliding scale for accessibility
Be clear about your cancellation policy
Review and adjust fees annually
Factor in unpaid time (admin, supervision, CPD)

βš–οΈ Transparency is Key:

Clearly display your fees on your website and discuss them openly with potential clients during initial contact. This builds trust and avoids awkward conversations later.
Remember: Charging appropriately isn't just about you - it's about creating a sustainable practice that allows you to serve clients effectively long-term.
