Recent news from Hull has understandably raised concerns about the care and standards families should expect from a funeral director. We ourselves are shocked and saddened that this has happened to these families.

At Ugalde and Son, we are proud to be a National Society of Allied & Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) member and part of a community of independent funeral directors committed to professional and compassionate care.

We are regularly inspected and voluntarily regulated under the UK Funeral Director Code. Families also have access to an independent complaints process through SAIF, delivered by an externally audited and Chartered Trading Standards Institute-certified body.

We hope these safeguards offer added reassurance that families and their loved ones will be treated with care, dignity and respect.

For peace of mind you should consider this advice below.

1. ASK if the funeral director is a member of a trade organisation, even if you know them. This is your reassurance.

2. ASK where your loved one will be cared for. All funeral directors who are part of an association will receive regular inspections so they will have nothing to hide. Ask if you can have a look around if you feel you need to.

3. ASK for their procedures and code of practise.

4. If you are looking into funeral planning ASK if the are FCA regulated.
