Strike Out Stigma – BLAME Awareness (Part 2)
Stigma isn’t always obvious — it often shows up in the words we choose and the assumptions we make.
BLAME: Blame, Labelling, Assumptions, Misconceptions & Emphasis
🔹 Blame
Blaming individuals for their condition or outcomes can be harmful and discouraging. Diabetes is complex — support, not blame, leads to better care and outcomes.
🔹 Labelling
People are more than a condition. Terms like “diabetic” can unintentionally define someone by their diagnosis. Let’s put the person first: “person living with diabetes.”
🔹 Assumptions
Avoid making assumptions about someone’s lifestyle, choices, or how they manage their health. Every person’s experience with diabetes is different.
🔹 Misconceptions
Not all diabetes is the same. Misunderstandings about causes or treatment can lead to unfair judgement. Challenge myths with accurate, compassionate information.
🔹 Emphasis
Over-focusing on numbers or “good” vs “bad” control can feel discouraging.
Shift the focus to progress, encouragement, and partnership in care.
The way we communicate shapes confidence, engagement, and outcomes.
Be BLAME Awareness and help create a more compassionate and empowering approach to diabetes care.
