Strike Out Stigma – BLAME Awareness (Part 2)

Stigma isn’t always obvious — it often shows up in the words we choose and the assumptions we make.

BLAME: Blame, Labelling, Assumptions, Misconceptions & Emphasis
🔹 Blame
Blaming individuals for their condition or outcomes can be harmful and discouraging. Diabetes is complex — support, not blame, leads to better care and outcomes.
🔹 Labelling
People are more than a condition. Terms like “diabetic” can unintentionally define someone by their diagnosis. Let’s put the person first: “person living with diabetes.”
🔹 Assumptions
Avoid making assumptions about someone’s lifestyle, choices, or how they manage their health. Every person’s experience with diabetes is different.
🔹 Misconceptions
Not all diabetes is the same. Misunderstandings about causes or treatment can lead to unfair judgement. Challenge myths with accurate, compassionate information.
🔹 Emphasis
Over-focusing on numbers or “good” vs “bad” control can feel discouraging.
Shift the focus to progress, encouragement, and partnership in care.

The way we communicate shapes confidence, engagement, and outcomes.
Be BLAME Awareness and help create a more compassionate and empowering approach to diabetes care.

"BLAME AWARENESS" (part 1)

Did you know that 8 in 10 people living with diabetes say they’ve experienced negative attitudes because of their condition?

From judgment and blame to harmful assumptions, stigma is still a reality.
The language we use matters.

It can build confidence, support self‑management, and improve health outcomes — or it can do the opposite.

Let’s choose words that empower, not undermine.
✅ Be aware
✅ Challenge stigma
✅ Support positive conversations

Be "BLAME" Awareness and help tackle diabetes stigma in your professional practice.

Diabetes UK x Central Mersey Diabetic Eye Screening:

During Diabetes Awareness Week, we delivered a presentation to around 20 members of Warrington Speak Up. The session used easy‑read materials and clear visuals to explain what diabetes is, key risk factors, signs and symptoms, and practical ways to reduce risk through healthy eating, physical activity, and regular health checks.

Know the 4Ts - signs of Type 1 Diabetes

One of the most impactful sessions at the last week's Diabetes UK conference was delivered by John Story. Together with his wife, Emma, he leads the Lyla’s Law campaign, established following the tragic loss of their two-year-old daughter, Lyla, due to undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes. The campaign is calling for urgent change, advocating for mandatory routine testing—such as simple urine or finger-prick blood tests—for babies and children who present with relevant symptoms at the point of care.

Know the 4T symptoms
- Toilet - need to go to toilet more often
- Tired - always feels lack of energy
- Thirsty - always want to drink more water
- Thinner - lose weight without any effort

Diabetes Awareness Week (8–14 June) is a great chance to raise awareness, promote early detection, and support healthier lifestyles for people with learning disabilities.

We’re delivering accessible, interactive sessions with support from Diabetes UK.

✅ On 4 June, we delivered a 30‑minute session at the Knowsley Learning Disability Partnership Board, reaching around 60 participants. It was well received, with strong engagement and lots of questions about diabetes.
