Why Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Minimally Invasive techniques provide a huge number of benefits for patients such as minimal scarring, no broken breastbone - less pain and a reduced chance of post-operative wound infections, and they shorten the recovery period from open-heart surgery from about 3 months down to about 3 weeks.

Mitral Valve Surgery
Minimally Invasive Approach

With the minimally invasive procedure, the surgeon uses a 2-3 inch incision on the right side of the chest and gently opens the space up between the ribs in order to see the heart. A high-definition video camera is then used to guide the procedure inside the heart.

There are a number of benefits to this approach:

A Patient's Viewpoint on his own Mitral Heart Valve Repair Surgery:

I really can't thank Paul and all in the staff involved with the operation enough. Everyone was just great before, during and after the operation. I don't think I was the world's best patient the night after the operation but everyone was just so understanding and so caring.

Introduction
I had my mitral valve repair surgery carried out robotically in the summer of 2018 at the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital in Broadgreen, Liverpool.

Minimally Invasive Atrial Fibrillation Surgery is performed using three 1cm ports on each side of the chest and through one of these we use a HD video camera to visualise the heart. Bipolar radiofrequency is used to isolate the pulmonary veins and the posterior left atrium. It does not need cardiopulmonary bypass unlike the minimally invasive cryomaze procedure.

Thank you to our patient for these images showing the three 1cm ports on each side of the chest for the totally thoracoscopic approach.

A Most Remarkable Patient Story:

Amy who is a 33 year old echocardiographer who works at a local hospital. An echocardiographer uses ultrasound to take pictures of the heart, a similar scan to how we see babies in the womb. She awoke one morning with a feeling of heaviness in her left arm but just thought she had slept in an awkward position. When it did not pass, she performed a scan (echo) on herself and found a 2x3cm benign tumour in her left atrium (LA).
