🩺 DO YOU KNOW YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE?

Blood pressure is one of those things you might not think about… because high blood pressure often has NO symptoms. 👀

You can feel absolutely fine and still have high blood pressure.

Over time, high blood pressure can put extra strain on your heart, blood vessels, kidneys and brain, increasing your risk of things like heart disease and stroke.

The good news? It’s easy to check! ❤️

A quick blood pressure check can give you an idea of what’s going on — and if it’s high, there are things you can do to help bring it down.

💡 Things that can help include:
• Moving more 🚶‍♀️
• Cutting down on salt 🧂
• Keeping an eye on your weight
• Drinking less alcohol 🍺
• Stopping smoking 🚭
• Taking prescribed medication if you need it

So don't wait until you feel poorly.

Know your numbers. Look after your heart. ❤️

If you haven't had your blood pressure checked recently, why not make it a priority?

🍺 “It’s just the two…” 👀

…yeah, but that ‘just the two’ might not be just the two! 😂

Do you actually know how many units are in your usual drink?

It’s easy to lose count when you’re having a nice night — especially when the glasses get a bit bigger and someone says “go on, it’s only one more!” 🍷😂

Here’s a rough idea:

🍺 Pint of lager (5%) = around 3 units
🍷 175ml glass of wine (13%) = around 2.3 units
🍷 250ml large glass of wine (13%) = around 3.2 units
🥃 25ml spirit (40%) = 1 unit

So that “couple of drinks” can add up quicker than you think!

The UK low-risk drinking guideline is no more than 14 units a week, spread over 3 or more days.

This isn't us telling you to put the kettle on and never have another drink! ☕😂

It’s just about knowing what you’re drinking and making a choice that’s right for you.

Next time you’re having a drink, have a look at the label or check the strength — you might be surprised!

🍻 Know your units, Greaty. Look after yourself. 💙

💛 September is Su***de Prevention & Awareness Month 💛

Sometimes, you never really know what someone is going through behind closed doors.

A person can look fine, laugh, go to work, look after their family and still be struggling more than anyone realises.

This month, we’re reminding everyone that it’s okay to ask “Are you alright?” — and it’s okay if the answer is no.

You don’t need the perfect words. Sometimes simply listening, checking in and letting someone know they’re not on their own can make a real difference.

If you’re struggling, please don’t feel like you have to deal with everything by yourself. Speak to someone you trust, contact your GP, or reach out to a support service.

And if you’re worried about someone else, trust your instincts. Check in. Ask twice. Listen.

💛 You matter. Your life matters. And asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 999 or go to A&E.

🎒📚 BACK TO SCHOOL TIME! 📚🎒

And just like that… the summer holidays are nearly over! 😭😂

The uniforms are getting found, the school bags are being dug out and somebody is definitely going to be looking for a missing school shoe at 8am on the first day! 👟🤣

As the kids head back to school, it’s a good time to make sure the whole family is looking after their health too.

💊 Check your medicines – make sure you’ve got enough for the next few weeks.

💉 Check vaccinations – if your child has missed any, give us a shout or check the NHS app.

👓 Don’t forget eyes and teeth – regular checks are important, especially when the kids are back to learning.

😴 Get back into a routine – earlier bedtimes can be rough at first, but they’ll thank you for it!

🧠 Look after their mental health – going back to school can be exciting, but it can also be a bit worrying. Have a chat and let them know they can talk to you.

And remember, not every cough, cold or sniffle needs a GP appointment. There are lots of NHS services and pharmacists who can help with common childhood illnesses.

Good luck to all our Greaty families getting back into the school routine. You’ve got this! 💙

🫀 Did you know statins might do more than lower cholesterol?

We all know that statins help lower your cholesterol and protect your heart. But research suggests they might have another little trick up their sleeve! 👀

Statins may also have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

🛡️ What does that mean?

Our bodies make something called free radicals. Too many of these can damage our cells and blood vessels.

Research suggests statins may help to:

❤️ Protect our blood vessels
🛡️ Reduce damage caused by free radicals
🔥 Reduce inflammation
🩸 Help stop "bad" LDL cholesterol from being damaged

Researchers are still looking into exactly how these extra effects work, and the evidence isn't completely clear yet. But it’s another reason why statins are such an important part of protecting heart health.

So, your statin might be doing a bit more than you thought, la! 😄

And remember: If you've been prescribed a statin, keep taking it as advised. If you're worried about side effects or want to stop taking it, have a chat with your GP or pharmacist first.

📚 Research: Studies published in medical journals have found evidence of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects from statins.

🗣️ HAVE YOUR SAY – PPG MEETING TODAY! 💙

Fancy having a say in what happens at Great Homer Street Medical Centre?

Our Patient Participation Group (PPG) is meeting TODAY at 2.30pm! 🕝

The PPG is your chance to tell us what you think about the surgery — what we’re doing well, what we could do better and what matters to you and your family.

You don’t need to know anything about healthcare and you don’t need to be an expert. You’re the patient, so your views matter! 🫶

If you’d like to get involved or find out more about our PPG, give the surgery a shout.

Come along, have a brew and have your say! ☕️😂

It’s your surgery, so let’s make it work for our Greaty community. 💙

🤯 WEIRD FACT WEDNESDAY 🤯

👃 Your nose can remember smells better than you might think!

Ever caught a whiff of something and suddenly been transported back years? The smell of your nan's cooking, a certain perfume, or even that unmistakable smell of a chippy… 😂🍟

That's because the parts of your brain involved in processing smells are closely connected to areas involved in memory and emotion.

So one little sniff can basically send your brain:
“RIGHT, REMEMBER THIS FROM 2007?” 😂

Your brain really does love keeping random receipts! 🧠🧾

The human body is absolutely mad, la. 💙

Happy Weird Fact Wednesday from all of us at Greaty! 👋
