When students first begin practising counselling skills, it is completely normal to feel nervous.
Many arrive worried about saying the wrong thing, not knowing what question to ask next, or feeling responsible for finding solutions to another person’s problems.
Yet something remarkable happens as confidence begins to grow.
Students start to trust the process. They learn that counselling is not about fixing, rescuing or having all the answers. It is about creating a safe space where someone can explore their thoughts and feelings, make their own connections and discover their own way forward.
Last night’s skills practice highlighted just how far our students have come. We saw thoughtful questioning, genuine curiosity, strong rapport building, attentive body language and the confidence to sit alongside emotion rather than rush in to solve it.
These are the foundations of effective counselling, and it is wonderful to witness students developing both the skills and the self-awareness needed to become reflective practitioners.
If you have ever wondered whether you could train as a counsellor, perhaps now is the time to explore that possibility.
