Thomas Porter & Son Funeral Directors are pleased to announce that the refurbishment of our Garston branch is now complete, and we are once again fully open to support families. 🎩

We have already received some wonderful comments this week about how warm, comfortable, and homely the branch feels following the refurbishment, which has been lovely to hear.

We also continue to receive heartfelt feedback about our Picture Chapel of Rest, which features a beautiful stained-glass window depicting a sailing boat. This special space often resonates with families whose loved ones worked on the Garston docks, spent time at sea, or enjoyed sailing on the River Mersey. The chapel provides a meaningful and personal setting that reflects the area's rich maritime heritage and holds special memories for many local families. ⛵️⚓️

We look forward to continuing to support our community from our newly refurbished Garston branch. 🤍

Today, we would like to take a moment to recognise and celebrate an extraordinary member of our team — Steve Cain, our Funeral Service Director. 🎩

Steve began his journey in the funeral profession at just 16 years old, starting with Liverpool City Council as a grave digger across Anfield. From there, he moved into the role of funeral operative, bearing and driving the private ambulance, before quickly progressing into funeral arranging and conducting services.

Thanks to his exceptional care, compassion and commitment to the families he serves, Steve qualified with distinction on 1st May 1986, achieving his National Association of Funeral Directors Diploma.

Now, after nearly 50 years of dedicated service to this vocation, Steve continues to support families across the city of Liverpool with the same kindness and professionalism that has defined his entire career.

Born and bred in Walton Village in Liverpool, Steve is well known and deeply respected within the community with two branches under Stephen Cain name on County Road and Priory Road.

Families regularly ask for him by name, often returning to Steve time and time again. In fact, one family this week requested Steve after he had personally arranged 15 previous funerals for them — a true reflection of the trust and comfort he brings during life’s most difficult moments.

When we ask families what makes Steve so special, the answer is always the same: his care, his calm manner, and his unwavering commitment. His reassuring presence puts families at ease, and the time he takes to carefully arrange every detail ensures each loved one receives the send-off they truly deserve.

When asked if he would choose this path again, Steve’s answer was a resounding yes: “This isn’t just a job, it’s a vocation. Helping people at the lowest point in their lives is a privilege.”

Steve, thank you for your lifelong dedication, and for the incredible years you have given to Thomas Porter & Sons. Your compassion, professionalism and commitment make you truly one of a kind.

❤️ Thank you, Steve.
