Exploring Values.

Emphasis on the exploration 🕵🏻‍♀️

When it comes to setting values, often people will pick values which they think they should pick.

This often comes down to the person not really knowing themselves/ or aren’t connected to themselves to know what they truly value.

This is how I do it.

So, HOW do we create motivation?

I often see coaches talking about how motivation is fleeting, and we just need to take action despite this.

Which is true.

But, there are evidence-based cognitive approaches that can create and enhance motivation. And seeing as though motivation (which is a feeling) is something created from our cognitions (our thoughts) Thoughts ➡️ feelings, it’s important that our coaching includes these approaches.

And this is what separates the GREAT coaches from the more prescriptive coaches.

Great coaches use these approaches that enhance client motivation (including communication skills that help clients identify and find solutions to their own barriers) 🥳

Prescriptive coaches tell their clients to “not rely on motivation and to push through”📝

You see, the problem with this approach is that there is no room to explore what needs AREN’T being met that has left your clients to feel unmotivated.

So, Instead of:
❌ “Motivation is a myth, it’s about dedication!”

✅ “Why do you think you’re not motivating yourself right now?”

❌ “You’re not always going to feel motivated, you’ve just got to stay consistent”

✅ “What’s leading you to not feeling motivated?”

I teach all of these approaches and models in The Fitness Psych Academy where you will gain an understanding of how to enhance client motivation, outcomes and increase retention rates.

You’ll walk out with the confidence and skills to implement these straight into your coaching so you’re not getting stuck on the same barriers.

George at delivered a brilliant workshop on Muscularity Oriented Issues within The Fitness Psych Academy. One of the key things I took away from the session was how fitness coaches like you can best support your clients.

It’s not your job to ‘fix’ mental health and body/eating related issues unless you’re a clinical psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist but it is our responsibility to help. There are two ways we can do this:

1. REDUCE STRESSORS: we can do this by not complimenting client’s bodies, removing the pressure, not using punitive language about food and exercise.

2. INCREASE SUPPORT. Through adequate signposting, active listening and genuinely caring.

In a few weeks I will be opening up the doors to The Fitness Psych Community. A place where you can attend workshops from experts, get support with your clients, have group supervision and be part of a community that supports your well being and self-care as a coach.

Is the issue a lack of control or have you just never been taught how to adaptively regulate your emotions?

‘If I only I had more control, I’d be able to lose weight’

Living a healthful life isn’t signing yourself up for a lifetime of actively controlling yourself around certain food.

There’s more to it.

We learn to regulate our emotions through our primary care-givers, who often unfortunately shamed us for expressing our core emotions.

Shaming us for crying when we feel hurt and upset “stop whingeing” “big boys don’t cry” “don’t be a baby!”
Being called a “madam” for feeling frustrated
“Stop showing off” when we ‘act out’, but all we really want is attention and connection
Being called a “nuisance” for being restless and needing to be stimulated.

We internalise these messages and use this as a model of how to regulate our emotions.

Which then transfers into adulthood where we continue to over-regulate our emotions by chronically suppressing and ignoring them.

So, ofcourse we have little awareness of how we actually feel, after spending years learning to ignore, suppress, hide

Ofcourse we’ve learnt to disconnect from ourselves and our emotions

Ofcourse we have developed maladaptive coping mechanisms to try to soothe the pain of not being able to feel

Of being so lonely and disconnected from ourselves

Food
S*x
Exercise
Alcohol
Drugs
People
Money
Social Media

This isn’t a ‘self-control’ issue,

This is an issue of never being taught how to develop a healthful relationships with your emotions.

Are you meeting your client’s needs?

Or your needs for that matter!

Meeting these 3 Psychological needs is essential for producing intrinsic motivation (the good stuff that is conducive to long term behaviour change)

Autonomy
Your client’s need to feel as though they have a sense of personal choice. Which means, as a coach, you shouldn’t be just telling your client what to do. That’s prescribing a programme, not coaching!

Relatedness
Your clients need to feel a sense of belonging and connectedness to others.
Coaches, make sure your clients feel as though they belong and that their voice is heard.
A client community group is also a bonus for this psychological need!

Competence
Your clients need to feel as though they possess the skills and ability to achieve their health and fitness goals.
If they’re not confident in their abilities, they are less likely to be successful in the long term!

These basic psychological needs are rooted in Self Determination Theory, which explains the psychological needs and tendencies that us humans need, to make lifestyle changes.

So, what happens if our needs AREN’T met?

Maladaptive coping mechanisms(excessive eating, excessive exercise)
Emotion distress
Rigid behaviours

Do you want to guide your clients’ to long term behaviour change?

Meet their Psychological needs!

Need support doing this?

3 tips to increase self-awareness 👇🏽👇🏽

1. Pay attention to what bothers you about other people.

Other people’s traits that we find annoying is often a reflection of a quality we dislike in ourselves.

So, pay attention the next time you find yourself irritated at someone’s behaviour.

2. Ask peers for feedback to uncover blind spots.

There will be aspects in your life that may need improvement, that you’re not yet aware of due to blind spots! We all have them!

Ask a partner, close friend or relative to offer feedback on something small to start with.

Anticipate that this may feel uncomfortable, and try and be open to their feedback.

Acknowledge and thank them, and then that information is yours to reflect on!

3. Identify emotional weaknesses

We all have emotions that we particularly dislike.

The feeling we’re most afraid to feel.

The thing with these emotions is that we will more likely try to avoid it.

Emotional eating, excessive exercise, substance misuse etc.

Exploring what our emotional weaknesses are, building up our tolerance to be with that emotion, and listening to what it’s telling us will allow deeper insight into ourselves!
