Ever wondered why relapse rates in traditional abstinence programmes can be so high?

For many people, simply “not drinking” doesn’t remove the neurological drive toward alcohol.
In fact, prolonged deprivation can sometimes increase craving and obsession, a phenomenon known as the Alcohol Deprivation Effect.

The brain has learned alcohol as:

* relief
* reward
* escape
* dopamine stimulation

So when alcohol is suddenly removed, the neurological pathways connected to it often remain fully intact.

This is why many people can stay abstinent for weeks, months, or even years… yet still feel mentally consumed by alcohol.

With pharmacological extinction and targeted exposure therapy, we work differently.

Rather than relying on willpower alone, we gradually retrain the brain’s learned response to alcohol.

Over time, those reward-based synaptic connections weaken.
The brain stops attaching the same reinforcement, excitement, and compulsion to alcohol.

Neurologically, alcohol is no longer understood in the same way.

That’s the difference between:

* suppressing a behaviour
vs
* extinguishing the learned addiction response.

Things I do NOT miss about drinking:

The blackouts, losing hours, sometimes whole nights, with nothing but regret filling in the gaps.

Drinking just to feel “normal” again, chasing away a hangover with the very thing that caused it.

3am hangxiety, waking up with a racing heart, replaying everything, wondering what I said, what I did, who I hurt.

Mistreating people I love, saying things I’d never say sober, acting in ways that don’t reflect who I actually am.

Letting my morals slip away — becoming someone I don’t recognize, one bad decision at a time.

And the toll on my health, mentally, physically, emotionally… all of it.

I don’t miss any of it. Not even a little.

“I’m not here to demonise drinking… but it’s the most toxic substance out there.” – Ollie Ollerton

Quit smoking? 👏
Start exercising? 👏
Stop drinking? 🤨 Why?

Alcohol is a drug.
It’s just one we’ve normalised and celebrated.

Maybe it’s not sobriety that needs explaining…
Maybe it’s the culture around alcohol.

We all know alcohol doesn’t just affect the person drinking it.

It can reach into the lives of the people who care about them
the missed calls, the broken trust, the quiet worry that lingers.

What feels like a private struggle rarely stays private.

If you’re questioning your relationship with alcohol, it’s not just for you, it’s also for the people who love you and care about your wellbeing.

09/04/2026

Why is it we don’t question drinking, but we question sobriety?

Alcohol is everywhere.
Celebrated. Expected. Normal.

But the moment someone decides to change their relationship with it, people become uncomfortable.

Questions come quickly.
Judgement follows.

The truth is, alcohol use exists on a spectrum.
And people deserve support wherever they sit on it.

Changing your relationship with alcohol isn’t something to explain.
It’s something to be respected ✅
