Trainers vs barefoot shoes — which is “better”?

Honestly: neither is best for everyone. It depends on your feet, your activity, and what you’re using them for.

Trainers can help if you need:
- more cushioning for higher impact
- more support/stability
- a gradual return to walking/running after pain or injury

Barefoot shoes can help if you want:
- more ground feel + foot strength work
a wider toe box (often)
- to train your feet/ankles progressively (key word: progressively)

The biggest mistake: switching overnight.
If you go from supportive trainers to barefoot shoes too quickly, you can overload tissues that aren’t ready yet (calves, Achilles, plantar fascia).

If you’re unsure what’s right for you (or you’re getting recurring pain), get assessed and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Big toe fusion vs cheilectomy - which do you need?

First, they’re for different problems, even though symptoms can feel similar).

Cheilectomy
Often considered when there’s pain/stiffness from bone spurs and some joint cartilage is still healthy.

Fusion
Often considered when arthritis is more advanced and the joint is too worn to move comfortably.

What decides it (usually): X-ray findings + symptoms + activity goals + footwear needs.

Don’t guess from Google - let's get it assessed properly.

Heel pain can be really frustrating - and it’s not always the same issue for everyone.

Here are 5 possible causes:

1) Flat feet
2) High arches
3) Overuse / repetitive strain
4) Injury
5) Plantar fasciitis

Treating heel pain properly starts with knowing the cause. If it’s been lingering, keeps coming back, or is stopping you doing normal day-to-day things, it’s worth getting it assessed rather than guessing.

If you’re not sure what’s behind your heel pain, get in touch.

What I look for on an initial examination:

a) How your foot moves.
b) Where the pain is coming from
c) What’s driving the pain

From this, I then know what to explore and test further in order to identify the problem - and then provide my recommendations for the right next steps tailored to you.

Midfoot fusion surgery is a procedure used to reduce pain and improve stability in the middle of the foot.

Most commonly when joints are arthritic, damaged, or unstable.

In simple terms: the surgeon joins (fuses) the painful joints together so they no longer move against each other.

That can sound daunting, but it can be a very effective way to relieve long-term pain and make walking more comfortable.

If you’ve been dealing with persistent midfoot pain, swelling, or pain that’s worse with walking/standing, a proper assessment will help confirm what’s going on and what your options are.

Running is great for staying in good shape, but on the flip side your feet can take a lot of impact, so it’s worth knowing the most common issues (and catching them early).

Common running foot injuries:

Plantar fasciitis – pain under the heel/arch, often linked to irritation of the thick band of tissue under the foot (and can flare after longer runs).

Stress fractures – tiny cracks from repetitive load, often after doing “too much too soon”. Watch for tenderness, swelling, and pain that doesn’t settle.

Achilles tendinitis – irritation of the tendon at the back of the ankle, commonly triggered by sudden increases in distance, pace, hills, or intensity without enough recovery.

If you’re getting persistent pain, don’t just push through and hope it disappears.

The sooner you understand the cause, the quicker you can get back to running comfortably.

Keeping kids active is brilliant - and a few simple habits can make a big difference in preventing avoidable injuries.

5 tips to help prevent kids’ sports injuries:

1)Wear the right shoes for their foot type and sport.

2) Focus on good technique (quality first, speed later).

3) Increase training gradually, avoid sudden spikes in sessions or intensity.

4) Always warm up before training and matches.

5) Prioritise rest + hydration (recovery is part of performance).

If your child has recurring pain, limping, or keeps picking up the same ni**le when participating in sports, it’s worth getting it checked early rather than pushing through.

Booking a consultation shouldn’t feel confusing — so here are the answers to the questions we get asked most.

At your first appointment, we’ll take a thorough history and do a full examination. If X-rays are needed, they can be done and you’ll come straight back in for the results. If further scans are required, we’ll arrange those for a later date.

Waiting times are typically 1–2 weeks, and your initial consultation is usually around 20 minutes.

To book, visit our website or call 0151 391 5769.

A lot of ankle injuries don't heal properly because people trust a misleading signal: the absence of pain.

Myth: No pain means your ankle is better.

Pain is often the *last* symptom to arrive - and the *first* to leave.

Your ankle can still have:

- Ligament laxity
- Reduced proprioception (balance/awareness)
- Weakness in the stabilising muscles
- Poor movement patterns that set you up for re-injury

…all while feeling "fine" during your day-to-day.

This is why so many people repeatably sprain the same ankle.

The swelling went down. The pain stopped. So they assumed the job was done.

But the underlying vulnerability? Still there.

The real test is NOT "does it hurt?"

It's: can you hop, land, change direction, and trust it under load, without hesitation?

If you've had an ankle sprain that "healed" but never quite felt right - or you keep rolling the same ankle - it's worth getting it assessed properly.

Not to find more problems. To actually finish the job.
