Two world leading researchers. One message that every female athlete needs to hear.
Energy deficits drive menstrual disturbances. Not just training. Energy intake is the key lever β€” and it is also the key to reversing it.

For athletes thinking about fertility or navigating pregnancy while still training β€” this is where everything starts.

Thank you Mary Jane De Souza and Nancy Williams for research that genuinely moves this field forward.

Yesterday I attended a talk online from Tara Leigh Mchugh, a Canadian world leading researcher in female athlete support.

The focus was the experiences of pregnancy and parenting in high performance sport. Not just athletes. Coaches and support staff too.

The research is clear and emerging. The knowledge gap is real. The need for evidence informed education inside performance environments is significant.

And it maps directly onto what I am seeing too on the ground.

This is the work and days like yesterday remind me exactly why it matters.

PS Massive respect to all female athletes, coaches and support staff who are sharing their experiences, it goes such a long way.

DM is always open for any conversations around this.

The more I learn about pregnancy nutrition, the more i realise how much research is missing for elite athletes specifically.

I am doing a specialist pregnancy nutrition course right now. I work with pregnant athletes inside elite sport every week and I am doing a part time PhD in this space.

All three keep raising the same question- where is the evidence base for what a pregnant elite athlete needs with a full training load trimester to trimester?

The gap is real. It is what drives the work behind the scenes. And exactly why having the right specialist support matters.

DM me if you work with a pregnant athlete or you are one πŸ™I'd love to connect.

Yesterday I spent the day filming content for Healthspan Elite around female specific nutrition, covering topics I am asked about constantly in my work supporting elite athletes.

Cannot share everything yet. But it is coming.

PS
Massive thanks to for running the show behind the scenes. πŸŽ₯

Training in the heat during pregnancy is not as simple as "just stop if it gets too warm."

The research is more nuanced than that. And for an elite athlete who loves training, it matters enormously.

New research published in 2026 looks specifically at how the pregnant body responds to heat during exercise. The findings change how I approach this with every athlete I work with.

Watch to the end. Then save this one β€” and share it with a practitioner or athlete who needs to see it.

πŸ“© DM me if this is the conversation your environment needs to be having.

Since the PhD post, a few people have asked. So here is the honest answer.

"So, what is your actually do day to day?"

Great question to be honest.

Professionally, I support elite female athletes through fertility, pregnancy and return to performance. Inside real performance environments. I am building out this side of this work that eduxyaes staff and clubs because athletes deserve practitioners around them who understand thia space.

Personally, it looks a little different. I train because it makes me feel good and there's value in doing hard things. I am doing a part time PhD, I am preparing to be a mum, trying to be present, be a good wife, friend and daughter and not take life too seriously while doing all of it.

Both sides feed each other. The personal side is exactly why the professional side matters so much to me.

If you’re new here- welcome. There's a lot more of thia coming

Talk about timing πŸ˜…πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Is it normal to start a part time PhD specialising in the pregnant athlete the month before you're become a mum for the first time?

Asking for a friend πŸ˜…

To he honest, it isnt normal. But nothing about this journey has been. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I have spent the last few years building my expertise and experience in fertility and pregnancy nutrition for elite female athletes. Working inside high performance environments. Supporting athletes through some of the most significant moments of their careers and their lives.

And now I am doing it with my wife expecting our first baby next month and a research career just beginning. πŸ€“

The work matters too much to wait. And honestly, I cannot think of a better time to be living and breathing this subject.

PS Our little girl will be 6 by the time I am finished the PhD. Now that's not normal πŸ˜…πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

This moment is everything. But it is not the full picture.

Behind a campaign like this is a group of women who showed up every single day β€” through training loads, travel, pressure, and everything else their lives were carrying alongside it.

My job inside this environment goes beyond performance nutrition. It is about understanding the full picture of what a female athlete is managing. Physically, hormonally, personally. And making sure the nutritional support around her reflects that reality β€” not a simplified version of it.

Elite sport is getting better at asking the right questions about female athletes. What they need. What they are carrying. What good support actually looks like at every stage of their career.

This campaign reminded me why that work matters. And how much further there is still to go.
More on that this week...
