Meet Paul, 70, a former painter and decorator from Liverpool. Paul was first admitted to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH), back in 2022, for urgent surgery to replace a valve in his heart and to repair his aorta, in an operation which was over ten hours long.

Sadly, Paul experienced some complications during his recovery, which meant that he was cared for at LHCH for more than five months.

However, Paul’s wife, Shelagh, praised all the staff at LHCH for ’caring for her’ just as they had cared for Paul.

She said: “We’d like to offer our thanks to all the amazing staff at LHCH.

“Everyone on Cedar Ward was brilliant – from the nurses, therapists and assistants. In particular, Lynn on the reception in Cedar Ward and Lisa and Alistair, Surgical Advanced Clinical Practitioners, who supported us so much.

“We even celebrated our first wedding anniversary in the family room on the ward, which was so lovely in the circumstances.

“Since Paul left hospital and returned home, he has done amazingly well. He can walk, talk and eat. I’m so proud of him. I would also like to give special thanks to Consultant Aortic Surgeons, Miss Harrington and Mr Jacob Marczak, for saving Paul’s life. We cannot thank them enough.”

Paul is pictured during his stay on Cedar Ward at LHCH and also with his wife Shelagh.

As we look forward to World Heart Day in September, if you’d like to share your heart story and patient journey, we would love to hear from you. Please email [email protected] and we will provide full details.

This week, we offered a very warm welcome to our newest cohort of resident doctors at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH).

More than forty qualified doctors have joined LHCH to start a range of speciality training posts across anaesthesia, intensive care medicine, cardiology, respiratory medicine, surgery and radiology. They will provide patient care whilst continuing their professional development and postgraduate training across all specialities.

Our new recruits attended their medical induction programme this week and were welcomed by Mr Manoj Kuduvalli, Medical Director who is also a Consultant Aortic Surgeon at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (pictured left). He said:

“I’m delighted to welcome our new colleagues, who are taking the next step of their career, here to Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

“Doctors play a pivotal role in ensuring we continue to deliver outstanding and compassionate care for our patients and families. I’m looking forward to working with our new cohort and supporting their career development during their time here.”

As we look forward to welcoming our newest cohort of resident doctors at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital tomorrow, we'd like you to meet Dr Clare Quarterman who is a Consultant Anaesthetist, Intensivist and Director of Medical Education.

In the latest of the ‘Meet the Specialist’ series on our website you can read about Dr Quarterman's career which combines three complementary areas of expertise – cardiac anaesthesia, intensive care medicine and medical education. Her role gives her the opportunity to care for patients at every stage of their journey while also helping to shape the next generation of doctors.

Her primary clinical specialty is cardiac anaesthesia. As a consultant cardiothoracic anaesthetist, she provides anaesthesia and perioperative care for patients undergoing complex heart and major blood vessel surgery. She is responsible for carefully planning each patient's anaesthetic, maintaining their vital functions throughout surgery and responding rapidly to any changes during the procedure to ensure the safest possible outcome.

Alongside her work in theatre, Dr Quarterman is also a consultant in intensive care medicine. She cares for some of the hospital's sickest patients in our Critical Care Unit, one of the largest single-site specialist critical care units in the region. Working across both the Post Operative Critical Care Unit and Intensive Care Unit, she supports patients through the crucial hours and days following major cardiothoracic surgery.

Alongside her clinical practice, Dr Quarterman's third specialty is medical education. Through her roles as Director of Medical Education, educational supervisor and Royal College of Anaesthetists College Tutor, she helps to develop the future medical workforce, ensuring doctors in training receive the guidance, support and opportunities they need to thrive.

Passionate about supporting doctors throughout their training, Dr Quarterman said: "It's important that we value all of our doctors because every one of them plays a vital role in delivering excellent care and ensuring patients have the best possible experience."

In the lead up to World Lung Cancer Day tomorrow (1st August), we'd like to share with you Gill's story. Gill is a member of staff at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital (LHCH) who has been given a fresh perspective on the care and services provided, following her own surgery to treat a rare form of lung cancer.

Gill, 67 years old from Croxteth, has been a hygiene assistant at LHCH for the past 8 years, providing the very best service for inpatients and supporting many other departments. However, in May 2026, she became a patient herself after routine lung cancer screening spotted a change in a nodule in her lung.

Gill explained: “I haven’t smoked for over 10 years, but because I was an ex-smoker I was initially invited to attend a lung cancer screening check in the community in 2021. This was then repeated every two years.

“The third time I went for the check, on New Year’s Eve 2025, they found a nodule had grown and I needed to undergo a series of tests and further investigation.

“When I saw the respiratory consultant, Dr Colin Smyth, he explained what they’d found in my lung but gave me so much confidence that everything was going to be ok.”

A few weeks before surgery to remove part of her left lung, Gill had an appointment with her clinical team where she was reassured that the cancer hadn’t spread and was only in one place.

“That was a big relief,” said Gill. “It meant I could enjoy a holiday and come back in a better frame of mind for the surgery, which I had with Mr Julius Asante-Siaw, consultant thoracic surgeon, in May 2026.”

When asked about her care, Gill said: “I couldn’t believe I was only in hospital for four days, but the main thing was knowing they were able to remove it all. All the staff on Oak Ward, my surgeon, other colleagues, the leadership team who came to visit me, were all brilliant and so supportive.

“This hospital is unbelievable, and they couldn’t have done any more for me. I can’t put into words just how grateful I am. As a member of staff, I always thought this place was good, but being a patient made me realise what outstanding really looks like.”

To start the week, we'd like to introduce you to former patient, Ken, whose family recently climbed Mount Snowdon in support of LHCH Charity as a way of saying thank you for the care he received during his time at LHCH.

Experiencing severe chest pain, sweating and dizziness, Ken knew something wasn't right. After arriving at A&E, he was told he’d suffered a heart attack and was immediately transferred to LHCH.

Here, Ken, who is pictured with his daughter on her wedding day, reflects on his experience:

"Once I arrived at hospital the team acted immediately. They carried out a procedure to unblock my artery and inserted stents. It was a really worrying time for both me and my family, but we knew I was in the best place possible.

"The operation was a success and I spent just over five weeks at LHCH, including time on the Post-Operative Critical Care Unit (POCCU). During my time on the different wards, every single person I came into contact with was just exceptional. Their knowledge, skill and professionalism were obvious, but what really stood out was the kindness and compassion they showed every single day.

"They didn't just care for me – they fought for me when I was at my very worst. My family were told afterwards just how critically ill I had been, and knowing how hard everyone worked to save my life means more than I could ever put into words.

"While my recovery has taken time, it's also given me the chance to reflect on just how extraordinary the care I received really was. I've taken things one step at a time. Cardiac rehabilitation gave me the confidence to rebuild my strength, and month by month I've been able to return to enjoying everyday life again. I feel incredibly lucky to have made such good progress.

"I'll never be able to thank everyone enough for giving me the chance to make more memories with my family, and their climb up Snowdon is one of those memories I'll always treasure."

Thank you for sharing your story with us, Ken. It's wonderful to hear how well your recovery is going and we’d also like to say a huge thank you to your family for supporting LHCH Charity. ❤

We'd like to introduce you to former patient Tom.

Last weekend, Tom's sons, Harvey (10) and Edward (5), took on the Cheshire Inflatable 5K in support of LHCH Charity as a way of saying thank you for the care their dad received at LHCH.

Tom, 34, was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) and was in and out of hospital throughout childhood. Several years later as an adult, tests unfortunately revealed his condition had deteriorated and he would need to undergo surgery for his aortic valve disease.

Here, Tom shares more about his experience at LHCH:

"Looking back, my health had been gradually getting worse over several years. I was becoming increasingly tired and was experiencing breathlessness, palpitations and reduced exercise tolerance. Being told I needed open-heart surgery came as a huge shock, especially with a newborn baby at home. Even though I was nervous, I knew it was necessary, and I felt reassured that I was in the best possible hands.

"The care I received was exceptional from start to finish. Every member of staff treated me and my family with kindness, compassion and professionalism.

"My surgery (performed by Mr Tomasso Generali and Mr Ram Dhannapuneni) was a success, and I spent around seven days at LHCH. Although I received great care throughout my stay, it was a huge relief to get home to my family.

"The first few weeks after leaving hospital were more challenging than I expected, but from around week six onwards, things became much more positive. I'm starting to feel much more like myself again and I'm looking forward to getting back to running. I already feel like I'll be stronger than I was before surgery.

"I couldn't fault the care I received, and I'm incredibly grateful to everyone involved in my treatment. One person who really stood out was my anaesthetist. He was there before, during and after my surgery. He was so easy to talk to, made me feel completely at ease and treated me like a genuine friend. His reassurance made one of the biggest days of my life much less frightening."

Thank you Tom for sharing your story, and an even bigger thank you to Harvey and Edward for their amazing efforts and support of LHCH Charity!

In just under a couple of months’ time, 12 members of staff from the LHCH radiology team will be taking on an incredible skydive challenge, all in support of LHCH Charity.

Our radiology department provide specialist imaging services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support patients throughout their care. Each year the department:

• carries out around 13,000 CT scans
• performs approximately 6,000 MRI scans
• undertakes more than 6,000 procedures in our cardiac catheter laboratories.

Behind every scan is a skilled team of radiographers, radiology assistants, X-ray staff, consultant radiologists, and the wider radiology workforce. Together, they provide high-quality diagnostic imaging and compassionate patient care.

The team spoke about the upcoming fundraiser:
“I think by bravely taking on this challenge and leap, it represents not only our dedication to supporting the continued work of LHCH Charity, but our commitment to patient care as well. By pushing ourselves to new limits, we hope to raise vital funds and awareness. Just as in our daily work, every effort can help save lives.”

Good luck to the team taking on this brave challenge! If you’d like to support the team please visit the news pages of the LHCH Charity website - see link in bio.

Yesterday we were delighted to surprise Dr Debar Rasoul, Specialist Registrar for Cardiology, with the Employee of the Month Award for June 2026.

Dr Rasoul was nominated by different colleagues for his professional, approachable, knowledgeable and extremely helpful nature to his work. They said:

"We were recently inundated with emergencies in Cath Labs and even though Debar was busy, as he was the registrar of the week, he stepped in to help with his calm and collected manner.

"He provided advice and support to staff, prescribed what was needed and made appropriate plans for everyone. The team are always reassured when Debar is present. We recently had a very tough night shift and he emailed all colleagues involved after to thank them.

"He has also sourced almost 100 lockers for all the resident doctors at LHCH which has made a big difference in improving their day-to-day life!"

Mr Manoj Kuduvalli, Medical Director, Rachael McDonald, Chief People Officer and Dr Clare Quarterman, Director of Medical Education visited the Cath Labs for the presentation. They are pictured with Dr Debar Rasoul, and Consultant Cardiologists/Clinical Leads, Dr Clare Appleby and Dr Joel Giblett.

A huge congratulations to Dr Rasoul on this well deserved recognition. We are thrilled to share that you will soon be joining us in the new role of Clinical Fellow at LHCH very soon. 👏
