🎉 A Warm Welcome to Our Liverpool Heart and Chest Retail Units Team

We’re very happy to welcome our colleagues from the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital Retail Units, who officially joined us in‑house on 1 May 2026, and it’s wonderful to have them now working alongside us as part of the same team. Their move from ISS Facility Services into NHS employment means they now join us on NHS terms and conditions, with access to the NHS Pension Scheme and updated payroll arrangements, helping everyone feel supported in the same way. 🫂

Bringing the Retail Units at Broadgreen Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital together under one in‑house service means we can work more closely, share the same standards and practices, and offer a more consistent experience for patients, visitors and staff across both sites.

As we settle into this new way of working, we’re also looking ahead to improvements, with plans for updates and refurbishments that will create brighter, more modern and welcoming spaces for everyone who uses our retail areas. ✨

🎥 We’re pleased to share a new video, developed with H***e Lea, highlighting the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and how its design has been brought to life to support modern healthcare.

Opened in October 2022, it is the largest hospital in England to provide 100% single en-suite inpatient rooms, helping to improve privacy, safety and recovery.

The video brings together insights from staff, patients and partners, showing the real impact of a thoughtfully designed environment on care delivery across the NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group and how collaboration has helped create a hospital fit for the future.

Great news! 🎉 Liverpool City Council has approved the next phase of redevelopment at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital site, bringing improved access, green spaces and new infrastructure.

Works are set to begin from August 2026. 🏗️

Liverpool City Council has given the green light for plans at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital that will improve vehicle and pedestrian access, make it easier to move across the site, and create new outdoor wellbeing spaces around the hospital, helping improve the experience for patients, visitors and staff.

This phase focuses on the infrastructure we need now, while also putting the foundations in place for future development in the years ahead.

We’re proud to be working with BAM and the The Eden Project to help transform parts of the former site into greener, nature-rich spaces in the heart of the city.

🌱🌳Logistics Team Marks Second Annual Social Values Day with Major Environmental Effort

The Logistics team successfully completed their second annual Social Values Day last week, joining forces with partners Panda Recycling UK, AJ Griffiths and Bizzie Lizzie to deliver a significant environmental improvement project at the Aintree site.

Building on the momentum of last year’s inaugural event, the team gathered once again with a shared goal: to contribute positively to the local environment and strengthen community partnerships. This year’s activity focused on large‑scale hedge planting, an initiative selected for its long‑term ecological benefits.

Over the course of the day, volunteers planted an impressive 500 hedges, creating new natural habitats that will support biodiversity, improve air quality, and enhance the landscape of the Aintree site for years to come. With this latest effort, the annual events have now resulted in a total of 375 metres of hedge planted since the initiative began a clear demonstration of the team’s sustained commitment to environmental stewardship.

Representatives from Panda Recycling, AJ Griffiths and Bizzie Lizzie worked alongside the Logistics team throughout the event, providing expertise, equipment, and hands‑on support. Their collaboration played a crucial role in ensuring the project’s success.

Team members described the day as productive, rewarding and a valuable opportunity to strengthen relationships with partner organisations while making a tangible difference to the local environment.

The Logistics team plans to continue growing the Social Values Day initiative each year, with further community and sustainability‑focused projects already being explored for future events.

Portering colleagues from Aintree University Hospital have received national recognition at the sixth annual MyPorter Awards, for the crucial role they play in helping deliver care to our patients 💙

Sean Sullivan was awarded Newcomer of the Year in recognition of the outstanding progress he has made since joining Aintree's Portering team in September 2024 🏆

Sean joined through the supported internship programme, delivered in partnership with Greenbank College. The programme supports people with disabilities and those facing barriers to employment through structured workplace placements. Sean has since secured a bank porter role at Aintree.

Sharna Hart, Head of Porter Services at Aintree, said: "Sean's journey from supported intern to bank porter in just over a year is something we are incredibly proud of. He has embraced every aspect of the role with real dedication and compassion for patients, and his story is a brilliant example of what inclusive employment can achieve. Seeing him recognised at a national level is thoroughly deserved."

Speaking after receiving his award, Sean said: “Being given this award means everything to me. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come and I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me.”

Porter Shift Managers Craig James and Geoffrey Myers were also given honourable mentions after being shortlisted in the Outstanding Contribution to Patient Experience category 👏

🎄 Christmas Tree Recycling – From Hospital Grounds to the Fylde Coast!

Following the success of our Christmas tree recycling initiative with Woodlands Hospice, we’re delighted to share that trees collected from Aintree University Hospital have made it all the way to the Fylde Coast and are now helping to build brand new sand dunes!

Woodlands Hospice collected trees from across Liverpool as part of their fundraising activity, raising vital funds for the hospice. Trees from our Aintree site were then collected and transported to the Fylde Coast by BAM UK & Ireland and Williams Civil Engineering, as part of their social value delivery on the current Royal Liverpool University Hospital podium works.

In early February, the beach volunteering day saw BAM, Williams and a fantastic group of volunteers joined by our Liverpool Nature Recovery Ranger, Nick White for a hands-on planting day. The trees are buried in the sand dunes with their branches and needles sticking out towards the prevailing wind – trapping sand and helping to build new dunes as part of the Lancashire Wildlife Trust’s Fylde Sand Dune Project.

It’s a wonderful reminder of what’s possible when organisations come together with a shared purpose of turning a simple act of recycling into real environmental impact. 💚

🎨🤝 Celebrating a wonderful collaboration between Liverpool John Moores University and our Hospital Arts in Liverpool programme at NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group!

Final-year History of Art student Charnele Washbourne is leading the development of a digitised archive of Aintree University Hospital’s art collection as part of her Major Practice Project. The project revitalises works gathered over two decades through donations, artist initiatives, and charity collaborations, bringing renewed visibility to the collection and improving public and staff spaces throughout the hospital.

First-year students Reyha Dickson, Jamie Butcher, and Daisy Hart are volunteering their time to support the initiative, gaining hands-on experience in archiving and exhibition practice while contributing to a meaningful community project.

We are proud to support this partnership, which reflects our commitment to using art to improve the experience of our patients, staff, and communities. ✨

⭐ Celebrating our domestic team at Aintree University Hospital!

Last week was National Apprenticeship Week, and we wanted to take a moment to recognise a fantastic achievement from our Hotel Services team at Aintree.

Working in partnership with Hugh Baird College, the team developed a 13-week Level 1 Cleaning and Hygiene Programme — shaped by a skills review and built around real working life, with on-site delivery designed to fit around shift patterns. The programme gave staff the opportunity to build formal knowledge in key areas including infection prevention and sustainable working practices, boosting confidence and opening doors to career progression.

We’re thrilled to share that 15 team members have already gone on to begin Level 2 apprenticeships — and following the success of this pilot, the programme is set to become standard training for all cleaning staff across the UHL Group. 🎯

Lee Sallery, Head of Hotel Services at Aintree, said: “This is a proud moment for the whole team and a true reflection of what’s possible when we invest in our people. We’re continuing to work with Hugh Baird College to introduce Level 2 accreditation as a standard requirement for all domestic staff across UHL Group, and we’re already exploring similar opportunities for our Portering colleagues.”

A huge congratulations also goes to NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group on being named Large Employer of the Year 2026 — recognition of our ongoing commitment to developing and growing our workforce.

🌟 Developing Our Leaders: Hotel Services Leadership Team Complete Management Programme

We're delighted that three of our Heads of Hotel Services – Lee Sallery, Judith Joughin and Sharon Stenning – have recently completed the Management Matters programme, delivered by our UHL Group Learning and Development team.

Over three days, our colleagues explored practical approaches to recruitment and induction, building confidence in handling team challenges, and understanding how compassion and self-care play a role in effective leadership.

Our Heads of Hotel Services play a vital role in leading teams across our hospital sites, ensuring our patients, visitors and staff experience clean, safe and welcoming environments every day. Their commitment to continued learning reflects the dedication they bring to their roles.

Well done to the team on completing the programme, and thank you to our Learning and Development colleagues for delivering such a valuable programme.
