We had a great chat at the end of baby massage on Monday.
A few if the Mums laughing about much little they knew about motherhood before they had a baby.
How unknowingly unsupportive they’d been to friends in the past who had babies before they did.
How unsupportive the friends who hadn’t had children yet, had been to them in the newborn days.
It was light hearted e laughed at ourselves and others, but the truth is, you dont know what you dont know.
AND on the other side of this once you are a Mum, once you have walked through the fires of initiation of those early days and weeks you dont see the world the same again, ever.
We talked of how connected we felt to other women with prams.
How there was a knowing, almost unseen nod of recognition to other mothers. I see you. I know where you have been and from where you are returning.
How all of us once we became a Mum are keen to help a new mum, keen to support, offer kind words because WE KNOW how important those words can feel.
No mother ever thanked anyone for unsolicited advice if is felt even the tiniest bit critical.
But every new Mum stood a little taller, smiled and thanks the one who said ‘aren’t you just a wonderful Mum!’
So lets forgive our former selves, and the ones who dont know yet and lets step forwards with love, connection, community for eachother.
When your friend has a baby, do you ask about the baby or her?
When your friend has a baby are you excited to see the baby, or her?
Mums I see you and I salute you!
You’ve got this!
You rock!
And if you have a mum in your life, friends, family, neighbour … why don’t you send her a message? Drop off some food? Take her out for a cake or offer to fold up her washing!
