MEN'S HEALTH WEEK

So many men put their health last, but waiting often makes things harder. Early diagnosis is key, and this , we're resharing some of the experiences of our patients who listened to their bodies when something didn't feel right, to encourage others to do the same.

Merseyside freelance designer Phil Alderson was shocked to be diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 44 – now he is in remission and warning other men that they can get breast cancer too.

Phil was play fighting with his daughter at his Wirral home in July 2016 when she caught him in the chest with her elbow. Later that night, whilst watching television, the same spot on his chest was uncomfortable, and he now felt a small lump behind his left ni**le.

Phil initially hesitated and wanted to brush it off as a bruise or lingering pain from play fighting, but the lump concerned him and led to him calling his GP practice.

Phil received the diagnosis of Stage Two breast cancer. Fortunately, mastectomy surgery was successful and Phil was given the positive news that the cancer had not spread.

Phil’s message has always been clear: “If you notice a change in your body, regardless of gender, get it checked out. You know what’s normal and not normal for you – listen to your body. Eary detection truly is key. Chances are it’s nothing, but it’s always better to be sure.”

Tawede has recently joined us as one of our fab oncology dietitians! After seeing what a positive impact nutrition had on her grandma back in Nigeria, Tawede was inspired to pursue a career in dietetics and has never looked back.

"For anyone thinking about a career in dietetics, I would say it is a wonderful path to take if you are passionate about helping people and want to make a meaningful difference through food and nutrition. It is a career that offers variety, opportunities to work across different specialties, and the chance to keep learning while supporting patients to improve their health and quality of life."

Patients at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre with early prostate cancer will be offered a high-precision form of radiotherapy that significantly reduces the number of hospital visits they need, following NHS approval.

Stereotactive ablative radiotherapy (SABR) precisely targets the prostate with high doses of radiation to treat the cancer and prevent it from returning.

Trials at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and other hospitals found just 5 doses of SABR are as effective as 20 doses of standard external beam radiotherapy in certain patient groups. It means patients can complete treatment in just 10 days instead of coming to hospital 5 times a week for 4 weeks.

SABR treatment will be offered to suitable patients with low and low intermediate risk prostate cancer.

Dr Shaun Tolan, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and Principal Investigator for the PACE trials that led to the approval, said:

"This is excellent news for eligible patients, giving them a more convenient treatment option that is just as effective as standard external beam radiotherapy. As an active research centre, we were heavily involved in the clinical trials and we are delighted that SABR has now become an option for all suitable patients with localised prostate cancer.

"We expect around 20% of the prostate cancer patients we treat will now be eligible for SABR. Your doctor will discuss this with you if SABR could be an option for you."

CCC has been recognised for its strong recruitment to a major national breast radiotherapy study.

The research team have enrolling 29 patients into the FAST-Forward Boost Trial since opening the study last November.

The study is looking at whether some patients who need an extra boost dose as part of their breast radiotherapy could safely have their treatment shortened from 15 sessions over three weeks to just five days.

If successful, the approach could make treatment more convenient for patients while also helping the NHS use radiotherapy capacity more efficiently.

Have you or a loved one received radiotherapy treatment?

Researchers across the North West have developed a new online dashboard to help patients learn about radiotherapy research studies and clinical trials available in the region.

We're looking for patients, carers and service users to explore the dashboard and tell us what they think. Your feedback will help us improve this resource and make information about research opportunities easier to access.

The survey is open until 19 June 2026.

Thank you for helping us improve access to radiotherapy research studies for patients across the North West.

Yesterday our CAR-T and Clinical Education teams welcomed delegates from across the region and beyond to hear from experts in CAR-T therapy and cellular treatments.

There were discussions about complication management, critical care considerations, and the future of CAR-T. There was also the opportunity to hear firsthand from a CAR-T Therapy patient who kindly shared his experience.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend, to our speakers, to our primary sponsor, Kite Gilead, and secondary sponsors, Bristol Myers Squibb and Galen, and our incredible colleagues for making the day possible.
