We have thought carefully about what would be helpful to say at a time when confidence in funeral care has understandably been damaged.
We do not believe that another statement simply telling families they can trust us is enough. Trust must be demonstrated through openness, accountability and the way people are cared for every day. It is a responsibility we take extremely seriously and never take for granted.
The Funeral Director Pledge was compiled by a working group brought together by the The Good Funeral Guide CIC to which Tom Owen and Son was proud to contribute.
The Good Funeral Guide is asking all of its Recommended funeral directors to adopt and publicly display the pledge and its accompanying Code of Practice. Going forward, these commitments will form part of what it means to be recommended by the Good Funeral Guide. We are proud to publicly adopt the pledge.
It sets out clear promises grounded in best practice, including ensuring families remain in control, communicating openly and in plain language, allowing time with the person who has died, supporting involvement in their care, seeking consent for care procedures, being transparent about costs and welcoming questions, feedback and complaints.
We are independently assessed and recommended by the Good Funeral Guide. We are also members of the National Association of Funeral Directors.
These are important parts of our commitment, but no logo, membership or professional association can replace openness and accountability. A pledge only has meaning when it is reflected in everyday actions.
We will publish the full signed Funeral Director Pledge on our website, display it within our funeral home and make it available to the families we support. These are not simply words about the service we hope to provide. They are promises we expect families to hold us to.
Please ask us anything. Should there be anything we can explain or do to help put your mind at rest, we will always answer as openly and honestly as we can.
