One family we recently supported chose an unattended cremation, but upgraded to a traditional hearse and a higher-quality coffin because those were the things that mattered to them after we explained the different options clearly.

They spent time together in our chapel of rest, arranged the flowers themselves, followed the hearse in their own car, and then were allowed to carry him into the crematorium and spend those final moments together. Afterwards, they gathered with family and friends in his favourite local pub.

They told us:

“We realised we didn’t need to spend money on things that weren’t important to us. Instead, we chose the parts that really mattered.”

A beautiful example of a farewell shaped around the person, rather than expectations.

A meaningful goodbye isn’t measured by how much you spend.

Families often worry that choosing a simpler funeral might suggest they cared less, but some of the most personal and moving funerals we have arranged have also been among the simplest.

People remember the favourite song, the stories that made them laugh and the quiet moments spent together not the amount on the final invoice.

Our latest blog explores how families can create a dignified, personal farewell without feeling pressured to spend beyond their means.

Legislation needs to be introduced urgently to ensure the prevention of any Funeral Director malpractice including the hoarding of the deceased, degrading storage of the deceased including ashes and preventing the lawful burial of the deceased.

We have thought carefully about what would be helpful to say at a time when confidence in funeral care has understandably been damaged.

We do not believe that another statement simply telling families they can trust us is enough. Trust must be demonstrated through openness, accountability and the way people are cared for every day. It is a responsibility we take extremely seriously and never take for granted.

The Funeral Director Pledge was compiled by a working group brought together by the The Good Funeral Guide CIC to which Tom Owen and Son was proud to contribute.

The Good Funeral Guide is asking all of its Recommended funeral directors to adopt and publicly display the pledge and its accompanying Code of Practice. Going forward, these commitments will form part of what it means to be recommended by the Good Funeral Guide. We are proud to publicly adopt the pledge.

It sets out clear promises grounded in best practice, including ensuring families remain in control, communicating openly and in plain language, allowing time with the person who has died, supporting involvement in their care, seeking consent for care procedures, being transparent about costs and welcoming questions, feedback and complaints.

We are independently assessed and recommended by the Good Funeral Guide. We are also members of the National Association of Funeral Directors.

These are important parts of our commitment, but no logo, membership or professional association can replace openness and accountability. A pledge only has meaning when it is reflected in everyday actions.

We will publish the full signed Funeral Director Pledge on our website, display it within our funeral home and make it available to the families we support. These are not simply words about the service we hope to provide. They are promises we expect families to hold us to.

Please ask us anything. Should there be anything we can explain or do to help put your mind at rest, we will always answer as openly and honestly as we can.

3 reasons to come along to our Coffee Morning

💛 A safe space
A relaxed, welcoming place where you can simply be yourself. There’s no pressure to talk, and it’s perfectly fine to just sit, listen and enjoy a cuppa.

🤝 Connection with others
Grief can feel incredibly isolating. Our coffee mornings offer the chance to spend time with people who understand, share experiences and feel a little less alone.

🌿 Access to support and resources
We can help connect you with local support, useful information and resources that may make things feel a little more manageable.

Our next Coffee Morning is:

📅 Wednesday 5 August 2026
⏰ 10am–12pm
📍 The Botanical Lounge, Colwyn Bay

Everyone is welcome, however recent or long ago your bereavement may have been. Come alone or bring someone with you ☕

Yesterday we attended the House of The Vivienne charity day at Llandudno Golf Club - Maesdu

It was a fantastic event, the sun shone and there was great live music. It was good to hear about the support that is offered in the community in Colwyn Bay, for people living with addiction and their families.

We can’t wait for the next one!

🟩🟩🟩House of The Vivienne🟩🟩🟩

A great day for the first House of The Vivienne golf day at Maesdu. Here's 2/3 of the field from today who took part, and helped raise plenty of money for a great cause.

Congratulations to the winners, the team of Adam Thorne, Chris Wright, Marc Jones & Ady Haywood.

Thank you to Castell Howell for their support of the day.

And a huge thank you to Lee and Chanel Williams for trusting us to host the day. Already looking forward to a bigger, and better event next year!

It's often the little things that families remember most.

💙A favourite perfume placed beside someone before they leave the chapel.
💙A knitted blanket made by a grandchild.
💙A football scarf, a gardening glove, a treasured photograph or a handwritten letter tucked gently into the coffin.

These small, personal touches tell a story. They reflect a life lived and help create a farewell that feels truly meaningful.

If there's something special you'd like to include for your loved one, please tell us. We'd be honoured to help make it happen.

Because every life deserves to be remembered in its own unique way.

Today marks six years since we took over the running of Tom Owen and Son Funeral Director.

For Tristan, it was a return home to continue his family's legacy. For Kelly, it was the start of a completely new chapter and a career we never imagined would become such a huge part of our lives.

Over the past six years, we've had the privilege of supporting many families across North Wales, each with their own unique story. Being trusted at one of life's most difficult times is something we never take for granted, and it's a responsibility we carry with great care every single day.

There have been challenges, long hours and plenty of lessons along the way, but there have also been so many moments of kindness, gratitude and friendship that remind us why we do what we do.

We'd like to say a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful team, our families, friends and everyone who has supported us over the past six years. Most of all, thank you to every family who has entrusted us with the care of someone they love.

We still love what we do just as much as we did six years ago, and we look forward to continuing to serve our community for many years to come.

Thank you for being part of our journey and thanks to Nathan Roberts Photography for the photo.

Sometimes it’s the smallest details that matter most.

⭐A favourite phrase.
⭐A colour they loved.
⭐A quiet nod to something only a few people would recognise.

Across these images, you’ll see different approaches to the same idea.
Peter’s service booklet was simple, with subtle touches - his favourite colour reflected in the font, nothing more than what felt right for him.

Alongside that, more personalised designs from a Good Funeral Guide CIC photoshoot show how creative and individual these can become.

There’s no right or wrong way. Sometimes it’s detailed, sometimes it’s understated.

Not everything has to be big to be meaningful.
